Book Reviews of Cat & Mouse (Alex Cross)

Book Review: A Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

James Patterson is probably the most brilliant suspsense writer of today. With "Cat and Mouse", he escelates the dark brutality and suspense, bringing back a dispicable villain from the past and creating an even more intriguing one. Gary Sonjei (from "Along Came a Spider") escapes from jail, and his hell-bent on vengeance to Alex Cross. He murders grandoise amounts of people, and spills their blood like water. Alex wonders, Why would Gary Sonjei be so disorganized, so blatantly insane. In the past, he murdered people in an organized way, but now, he's just totally insane. I haven't read "Along Came a Spider" yet, but this book is just as enjoyable for me not even having read it. As the mysteries thicken with Sonjei, Thomas Pierce, another detective, is working on one of the most bizarre murder cases of today-a mysterious man named Mr. Smith, who performs autopsies on his victims, WHILE they're alive. Thomas Pierce is brought in to help on a case involving someone who may or may not be an accomplice to Gary, and things escalate to an exciting and terrifying climax. This book really tells a great tale, involving such themes as infidelities, humanity, love, and trains (read the book and find out) :). It's one of the most shocking and suspenseful books I have ever read, and it's sooooo hard to put down. It's a masterpiece, in my opinion, and ranks with Patterson's "Roses Are Red". Brilliance! Sheer brilliance!!

Book Review: One of the best James Patterson novels around.
Summary: 5 Stars

Cat & Mouse was the story of Alex Cross, an African-American police officer who was working on a case of two serial killers. One was Gary Soneji--the antagonist from Patterson's previous thriller Along Came a Spider--who was hellbent on taking revenge on Cross, family included. The other was Mr. Smith, a serial killer with split personalities who performed "autopsies" on his victims while they were still alive.

This book has a good balance of scenes between Cross' personal life (his loving grandmother, his huge best friend Samson, his two beautiful children, and their teacher whom he is falling in love with) and business life.

The book is very easy to follow and goes by at a very quick pace. The characters were realistic along with the plot.

The thing that I liked most about the book was the way Patterson told the story. I actually found myself feeling sorry for the bad guys as well as the good, which usually never happens.

I would recommend this book to anyone but be sure not to make the same mistake I made. I started the book late at night before I went to bed at about 11 o'clock. It was so good that I continued to read until three in the morning, which left me sleepy and irritable the next day at work. If you are going to read this book, be sure to start it when you have at least two hours of spare time.

P.S. Please read my other reviews.

Book Review: A Worthy Sequel
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved "Kiss the Girls" and "Along came a Spider" and I loved this latest book as well.

It was as fast-paced and thrilling as the others. Okay, Gary Soneji finds his demise way to early, but then ... there is still Mr. Smith to keep the reader interested.

I think switching first person narrative from Alex Cross to Agent Thomas Pierce in the middle of the book was a nice twist and added to the story.

I had my suspicions on the identity of Mr. Smith early on, but that did not diminish my reading pleasure. I kept telling myself that this could not be true only to learn near the end that the FBI had had the same suspicions from the beginning. Well, good for me, I'm as smart as the FBI ! :-)

Usually I am not into love scenes, I don't think, a detective story is the right place for them, but in this case I granted it to Alex Cross. Maybe the reason is that I read Patricia Cornwells "Point of Origin" prior to this book, where everyone seems to suffer from severe depression. So I was relieved that at least someone in law enforcement finally finds some joy in life.

I would recommend "Cat and Mouse" to any James Patterson and Alex Cross fan, though it's probably best to read the books in order. I for one am still wondering how Soneji got out of prison, but that's probably in a book I haven't read yet.

Book Review: CAPTIVATING!
Summary: 5 Stars

How much do I love the work of James Patterson? Let me count the ways..Along Came a Spider, Kiss the Girls, Hide and Seek, Cat and Mouse - I am just about to start Roses are Red!

I thought that this was one of the best books that Patterson has written. I loved the re-introduction of Gary Soneji as everyone's favourite psycho serial killer, I love the fact that Alex Cross is such a sensational detective, I loved the story - as one killer is caught and killed another is on the hunt (and somehow JP blends them beautifully together).

But, I think the main reason that I love JP's work is the so very fast paced action and dialogue. The fact that Sampson and Cross are brilliant detectives but quite unlike Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme where he knows EVERTHING just by looking at a blade of grass. I love thrillers that keep you turning the pages because you WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT and with his excellent concept of short chapters, you cannot put this one down!

I loved Cat & Mouse for the heart-stopping twists and turns, excellent characters, brilliant storyline and damn fine writing style. If you are looking for a serious crime thriller, that will only take you a day to read as you will not be able to put it down, then definately get Cat & Mouse, you will not be disappointed!

Book Review: THE BEST ALEX CROSS NOVEL IN THE SERIES.
Summary: 5 Stars

When i sat down to read this novel i was suffering from Patterson jet lag, i had just read six of his books in about a months time, and i was missing my usual taste of Anne Rice novels somewhat. By the time i had finished the book though i was so very glad i'd started it.
Gary Soneji, Alex Cross' nemesis, filled with hate and anger at Cross for capturing him some five years previous, has escaped from the mad house, and he thinks it is now time to make the aquaintance of an old friend. From then on its pure and utter mayhem the whole way true. The pages go by with swift and welcoming ease and the story gets more interesting as each chapter closes.
Not only is there one devilish fiend in this epic detective thriller, there are two, and it is hard to say which one is the more evil. Cross is truly in grave danger as he starts out on what is going to be his most intense and action filled adventure yet. Buckle your seatbelt, the ride starts here.
Once again Patterson has got the whole crime scene/detective aspect of the novel spot on, and the psychological element to cross' character (he is a psychologist as well as a detective) was a joy for me as i am a psychology student. Buy the book. Trust me. Wave goodbye, Mr Smith has left..... for now.
