Book Reviews of Carrie's Story: An Erotic S/M NovelBook Review: Good Book Summary: 4 Stars
This was a good story and I can't wait to read the sequel. It did well to bring me into the characters' mind.
Book Review: A Toss-up Summary: 3 Stars
Carrie is one of those stereotypical "so smart yet so naive" grad students that embarks on this path of BDSM seemingly out of the blue. Her master is the sterotypical "rich guy with too much time" character that has somehow maintained a sizeable fortune and a housekeeper that fully participates in his antics. At some times Carrie seems to find comfort and pleasure in being a slave for Johnathan, then at other times it seems she's only going along with it as some sort of 30-day trial. Some of the scenes are so far fetched that the book lost some its appeal...[the slave auction was the most out there episode in the whole story and it was hard for me to grasp the idea that an operation that big and sophisticated would not have attracted some outsider attention - same thing with the pony farm]. I thought the ending left a bit to be desired, it seemed to rushed...like the author just ran out of things to say. But for all its faults I couldn't put it down and read it the day I got it. Once I resigned myself to the story being just fantasy (not based on reality) it got more entertaining.
Book Review: Competent prose; boring story Summary: 3 Stars
Carrie's Story isn't much of one. I suppose this book was meant to be a realistic perspective of the BDSM scene. Maybe it is; I don't know. I have never participated or observed it. While the author can write a competent sentence in English, even whole paragraphs of them, the story is so dull, the characters so generic and lifeless that it reads more like a college student research paper. This is supposed to be fiction, isn't it? Well, I'd rather read a work of the imagination than dull social realism, even if the social realm is a bit far out. If Dickens had portrayed the world of the London underclass this way, he never would have made a dime. By the way, the subtitle of the book is "An Erotic S/M Novel." I couldn't find a thing erotic about it except the cover. Nice cover!!!
Book Review: Pony story Summary: 3 Stars
When I started, I was disappointed with the book. I found Carrie to be slow of thought even though the author tried to give the impression of her being school/book smart. I shook my head thinking there is no way one submits so completely so fast. But once I started viewing the characters as pure fiction and didn't try to relate it to the scene as I know it, it became a much more enjoyable book. By the end I actually starting wondering what the next turn would bring her. Overall, I would say it's great reading as long as noone believes it is what really happens in BDSM relationships in the real world.
Book Review: Ok for a quick read Summary: 3 Stars
I read this book rather quickly. It is an easy read, but there's not a lot of scenery in this book. I prefer a book that really sets a scene well and this one falls short in that department. There's not much emotion or flowery details that paint a picture to visualize while reading.
It's written almost matter of fact, and in my opinion leaves the story more on the boring side. I had just finished reading "The Market Place" series when I read this book and it pales in comparison for a lifestyle story.
