Book Reviews of Carlson's Guide to Landscape PaintingBook Review: A Must Read for Landscape Painters Summary: 5 Stars
Carlson's Book does not really need anymore 5 star ratings, but here is mine anyway. Just finished reading the book and it is a great book. After reading the few criticisms of this book I was uncertain if I wanted to order it. Yes the photo's are in black and white, but this really serves the point the author is trying to drive home. Carlson wants us to see in a new way. By providing us with B&W photo's we are able to visualize color values more easily than if the pictures were in full color. Some of the insights in this book might take a life time to develop on your own. A carefull reading of this book may save you years of experimentation by trial and error. The book is ment for landscape painters but some of the priciples could be utilized, even by abstract painters .
A must read for any serious art student.
Book Review: Basic information of value to all artists Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book twice, the second time because I realized how truly valuable the information in it is and wanted it embedded in my brain. The second time around I underlined everything that I thought I might want to refer back to while doing a landscape painting. 'Just the important stuff', I told myself. I ended up underlining almost the whole book! This is a must for the reference bookshelf of any artist, beginner or professional. While the writing style might seem a bit outdated, remember that Carlson was born in a different time and in another country and I have to say I found it charming. I probably learned more from this book than any other I have read to date. I am also a portrait artist and I found the information helpful in that regard.
Book Review: Everything you've forgotten or didn't learn about painting in art school. Summary: 5 Stars
Everything you've forgotten or didn't learn about painting in art school is in this book. The facts and beauty of landscape painting are carefully considered and analyzed. The principles apply to all painting. John F. Carlson is emotionally inspiring as well as factual. You may also broaden your vocabulary reading his words. Sometimes you have to go back at least a few decades to find the answers you are looking for in art. This excellent book will fill in the gaps in your knowledge of landscape painting. If you are serious about painting landscapes, this book is a godsend. It is the 'last best hope on earth' for landscape painters.
Book Review: Expert instruction from a master of the subject. Summary: 5 Stars
John Carlson is unique among artists in his ability to teach painting as masterfully as he did it himself. This book offers a deeper understanding of the subject than any other I have ever read. All things discussed within its pages seem perfectly logical and understandable and yet entirely new in the way they are presented. Master painter, master teacher, Carlson engages his audience completely and imparts his understanding fully. To read his philosophy of art alone is well worth the price. A must have book for the experienced painter and beginning student alike.
Book Review: Solid advice in painting technique Summary: 5 Stars
I agree that this is an essential "how-to" guide for landscape painters. I particularly liked his sections on the four planes of the landscape and on aerial perspective. The chapter on linear perspective is helpful because it addresses common linear perspective problems in landscape painting. It would be wonderful if a publisher would add color reproductions of modern painters to illustrate Carlson's ideas, but don't get put off by the lack of color pictures. This is solid advice in painting technique.
