Book Reviews of Careless in Red: A NovelBook Review: A Real Page Turner Summary: 4 Stars
I have read just about everything Elizabeth George has written, and overall I have found her novels a terrific read and Careless in Red was no exception. I thought this book in the Detective Lynley series was a real page turner in her latest Detective Lynley series. And the reunion of his former partner Barbara Havers was nice touch.
There are lots of other characters and settings in the story and Ms. George ensured that each was developed (maybe a bit too much) until I almost felt like I knew them. If you're into cliff climbing, then you'll be in for a treat since the author does a terrific job of explaining all technical and difficulties of cliff climbing. There are plenty of reviews that go into detail about the story so I won't add more print.
Book Review: The reluctant return of Lynley Summary: 4 Stars
This was a welcome surprise after the What Came Before He Shot Her; I found the book more tedious than enjoyable. I was pleased to see the reluctant return of Lynley who is still processing the death of Helen, his wife, by taking a walking holiday. This book is full of his internal angst and his reluctantance in being drawn into a murder investigation; he happened to discover the body of the victim during his walk. I appreciate the way she deals with the internal struggles of Lynley, how he reluctantly gets drawn back into life and his work. His partner Barbara Havers joins the investigation and they also renew their friendship and working relationship after Helen's death. I was happy to have Lynley and Barbara back and look forward to her next book.
Book Review: At last they're back Summary: 4 Stars
While the reviews seem to split between longtime fans and newbies, if you haven't read George before you might not understand that all these stories link. This allows a depth of character development that's rare these days and creates a sense that the people in these novels live and breathe. I for one am glad to hear George back in voice with her characters full of doubts and contradictions as usual. She has an unerring eye for setting too, capturing the distinct atmosphere of the Cornish coast. I found this book particularly overloaded with suspects, but some new and interesting actors have appeared. I hope they stick around. I found Lynley's thoughts on Havers, which appear on the last page, particularly touching.
Book Review: I'm so glad she's baaaaack! Summary: 4 Stars
Finally, a nice, cozy, suspenseful little read, just what I want to expect from George. A historical tour of a tiny (fictional, I assume) Cornwall town and an introduction to its culture and geography (who would have known Cornwall was such a surfing hub? Not I.) Lots of people with lots of secrets. Lynley and Havers are back, finally. I missed them like I miss irritating but somehow comforting relatives. You're glad to see them come and you're glad to see them go. Who in the world killed Santo Kerne? He was such a fine lad...well, OK, he wasn't, but he didn't seem like the murder victim type. Even Helen returns in a way, in the form of bittersweet memories.
Book Review: Careless in Red Summary: 4 Stars
Elizabeth George's latest mystery gets off to a slow start and seems to repeat her earlier work. As the story moves on, the pace picks up and the character development becomes more interesting and engaging. The strength of her work as always lies in her sense of place and her realistic and inticate psychological characterizations. This particular book was hilarious at times, using British vernacular. There were some loose ends by the time the story ended, but maybe that's the teaser for George's next book. We'll see. This book is definately a relaxing and enjoyable read, well worth while.
