Book Reviews of Careless in Red: A NovelBook Review: Thank goddess for Havers Summary: 4 Stars
I love Lynley. I love Havers, and all the New Scotland Yard personnel they entail. Never thought I cared about Helen, until she was killed. ("Without any witness" and "What came before he shot her" are mandatory reading. These are tour de force novels, regardless of the series. The former is the only mystery that has ever made me cry.) "Careless in red" was the hoped-for continuation of the Lynley-Havers series.
"Careless in red" is a very good read, but I hope it is merely a transition to new work. The story is interesting and certainly in the George tradition. Lynley is sort-of back, a little too interested in the new attractive woman to be believed. Havers is her wonderful self. The character of the new police chief in the small town Lynley stumbles upon is also terrific. (I could envision a new series featuring her and Havers.)
Whatever direction Ms. George decides to take with Lynley and Havers, I'm there -- as long as they don't realize they are "meant for each other." The characters are the ultimate pairing, and their new relationship provides many new directions. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Book Review: A twisting return, but I'll take it Summary: 4 Stars
Yes, it seems that Thomas Lynley will detect again, hurray! I was so shocked and stunned when Elizabeth George "killed" Helen. It just didn't make sense to me, and still really doesn't, as I think she was a wonderful counterpart to Thomas and a full member of the team. I didn't know how on earth she would bring the books back.
Thank goodness, she has found a way, and it's good. This story has many, many side plots that have to be untangled and while I did not enjoy this as much as past books, I can see that it had to be this way. There is the main murder, plus: an old murder that involves a family's shame, another young man's dilemma with his dad, a young girl's struggle with her potential calling, and a woman's secret past with a current cause for mental anguish. Not to mention, there is poor Thomas, in his hell on earth. It's a lot to get through, and at least two readings are best to make sure you don't miss a detail.
Don't get me wrong--I will gladly take this book, with it's tangles to pull, as long as there are many more mysteries to come with Thomas, Barbara, and all the other characters I have grown to love!
Book Review: Continuation of a great series Summary: 4 Stars
This phase of the series follows the death of Helen and Lynley has left Scotland Yard and is walking aimlessly along the English coast. A section of coast that is known for surfing. That was an interesting aspect of this book. When Tommy reaches the area of Casvelyn, he finds a body on the cliffs by the shore. He runs up to a cottage hoping someone is there and breaks the window to get in. He finally finds Daidre who helps him find a phone to call the authorities. Since he was the first to find the body, he is ordered to stick around town to answer questions. And thus begins the investigation of Santo Kerne's murder. I was really looking forward to reading this book. I really think this author is in a league all by herself. Her writing is incredibly intricate and yet woven in a complete and satisfying way. However, the climax and the ending left me unsettled. This book was over 6oo pages and it took a while to get the stories established. So I was expecting an exciting and satisfying ending. It just wasn't delivered the way I expected. I still love the series, this one just wasn't my favorite.
Book Review: Good enough Summary: 4 Stars
Like most others writing a review I'm a big fan of Elizabthe George and her Detective Lynley series. After reading many of the reviews I almost didn't order the book. But I did order it, I did read it and I'm giving it 4 stars. It may not have been her best book in the series, but it was Good Enough. A good enough plot to hold my interest, a good enough writing style to keep me entertained, and a good enough series of characters to make the book worth the read.
I think its unrealistic to expect an author (any author) to always produce 5 star books. That's just too high of a standard to maintain. I love Ms. George's writing style and even if the plot had a few weak spots, I can overlook it because it held my interest.
My biggest criticism is the names of the characters. They were TOO wierd and I couldn't keep them all straight. Had to take notes and keep referring to them. Other than that I'd say the book is definitely Good Enough to buy!
Book Review: Vintage George Summary: 4 Stars
Tension rolls with the waves in CARELESS IN RED by Elizabeth George and never stops even in the conclusion.
Thomas Lynely is trudging the Path on the Cornish coast to escape the kindness of his family, friends, and co-workers after the death of his beloved Helen. A splotch of red on the rocks near the shore attract his attention and he finds himself involved in a murder.
A cast of suspects confuses the local police and Lynely is contrived into aiding the investigation. Behind the scenes, Sir Arthur of Scotland Yard wants Lynely back at work and he sends Barbara Havers to assist local DI Hannaford with her search for a clever killer.
Allow plenty of time for this one, because you'll keep turning the pages to discover what happens next.
