Book Reviews of Can't Wait to Get to Heaven: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle)

Book Review: Flagg's characters touch you and stay with you
Summary: 5 Stars

Listened to the author read this book on audio while my mom and I drove back and forth to hospital visits during a recent cancer scare/surgery. This book was a delight to us both. (It held our attention and gave us great pleasure in the distraction through both the scary part of our drive, when we didn't know what the doctor would find, and again during the relieved part of our drive, when we knew mom was "cancer free"!)

Previous to this I was only familiar with Flagg for Fried Green Tomatoes, which I loved. But her way with making you feel familiar, warm, and invested in her characters holds as true with this book as with the earlier one. And she voices her characters on the audio version in such a way as to make you comfortable with everyone in this story immediately. I really wanted to meet them, to know them and to find out more about them all!

My one and only quibble was with the characters and storyline involving the mother and her mentally-challenged daughter. It seemed kind of tacked on for effect; they didn't seem to fit in with the rest. The book would have been perfect without them in it at all.

I am happy to have had this story with us on the road: my mom and I both loved Aunt Elner and loved all her vividly portrayed friends and family members. Highly recommended.

Summary of Can't Wait to Get to Heaven: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle)

Combining southern warmth with unabashed emotion and side-splitting hilarity, Fannie Flagg takes readers back to Elmwood Springs, Missouri, where the most unlikely and surprising experiences of a high-spirited octogenarian inspire a town to ponder the age-old question: Why are we here?

Life is the strangest thing. One minute, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in her tree, picking figs, and the next thing she knows, she is off on an adventure she never dreamed of, running into people she never in a million years expected to meet. Meanwhile, back home, Elner?s nervous, high-strung niece Norma faints and winds up in bed with a cold rag on her head; Elner?s neighbor Verbena rushes immediately to the Bible; her truck driver friend, Luther Griggs, runs his eighteen-wheeler into a ditch?and the entire town is thrown for a loop and left wondering, ?What is life all about, anyway?? Except for Tot Whooten, who owns Tot?s Tell It Like It Is Beauty Shop. Her main concern is that the end of the world might come before she can collect her social security.

In this comedy-mystery, those near and dear to Elner discover something wonderful: Heaven is actually right here, right now, with people you love, neighbors you help, friendships you keep. Can?t Wait to Get to Heaven is proof once more that Fannie Flagg ?was put on this earth to write? (Southern Living), spinning tales as sweet and refreshing as iced tea on a summer day, with a little extra kick thrown in.
