Book Review: Pure fluff
Summary: 2 Stars
This book did have a few laugh-out-loud moments and was a reasonably entertaining "check your brain at the door" type of read. However, the plot was pretty silly and unrealistic. The main character, Emma, is a little less pathologically self-centered than Becky in the Shopaholic series, but only a little. Like Becky, she also lies constantly to everyone, including her closest friends and family, which disturbed me.
The plot is a typical Cinderella story down to the wicked stepsister (cousin, in this version). Emma has a miserable life until she is rescued by a Prince Charming who is extremely wealthy, much older than her, and, did we mention, her boss? I found it creepy that Jack never even worries about the ethics of dating his most junior employee. Not to mention he betrays her deepest confidences on national television, but she still takes him back. I feel like books like this perpetuate stereotypes by portraying women as helpless, ditzy bimbos who need older men to sweep in and fix the injustices of their lives.
