Book Reviews of Can You Keep a Secret?Book Review: Can You Keep a Secret? Summary: 5 Stars
Can You Keep a Secret? is a charming novel written by Sophie Kinsella that tells an excellent story and was thoroughly enjoyable to read. Emma Corrigan is a typical, young woman in the working environment whose life drastically changes after an encounter on an airplane. Emma spills all of her personal information to her neighbor on the airplane due to the fear of losing her life, but fortunately it was only turbulence. After the terrifying experience, Emma later finds out that all of the personal and secretive information she let out to was her boss, Jack Harper. You must read the novel to find out what unfolds after her life altering experience and the problems Emma must face and the relationships that end up prospering. Emma Corrigan is a character that allows you to laugh at her easygoing personality, yet the reader can learn from her mistakes that she has made in both the business and social environments. At times you must feel some sympathy for the experiences that Emma has been put into, but overall she is a dynamic character with great personality traits. Jack Harper, Emma's boss, is a millionaire, yet he does not flash his wealth to the general public. He can be perceived as deceitful at times, but he is usually a caring or compassionate person, and an ideal boyfriend. I chose to read this novel because I have loved reading previous books by Sophie Kinsella including The True Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic takes Manhattan, and Shopaholic Ties the Knot. Can You Keep a Secret? was extremely entertaining, fun and pleasurable to read, but I can only recommend this book to the female teenagers, because this book is considered a romance novel and there is no fighting, police chases or other adventure scenes that would entice the male audience. The book is easy and straightforward in following the plot development. It is virtually impossible for a teenager's mind to wonder while reading this book. I was so enthralled and I could not wait for the events to unfold. Every young girl should be captivated with Sophie Kinsella's great storyline and immense attention to detail. The style that Sophie Kinsella uses is clear, but she is a British author so at times you have to make the connection that Mum is equivalent to Mom, or pounds is equivalent to our dollar. This novel completely satisfied my desire, and I am content with my decision in choosing to read it. I am usually counting the pages of each chapter to see if I am near the end, but with this book I actually did not want to put it down or for it to come to a close. After completing the novel, I have already recommended this book to several of my friends encouraging them to read it as well. Can You Keep a Secret? is considered one of New York Times Bestsellers and I look forward to reading The Undomestic Goddess and Shopaholic and Sister by Sophie Kinsella in the future.
Summary of Can You Keep a Secret? With the same wicked humor, buoyant charm, and optimism that have made her Shopaholic novels beloved international bestsellers, Sophie Kinsella delivers a hilarious new novel and an unforgettable new character. Meet Emma Corrigan, a young woman with a huge heart, an irrepressible spirit, and a few little secrets:
Secrets from her mother: I lost my virginity in the spare bedroom with Danny Nussbaum while Mum and Dad were downstairs watching Ben-Hur. Sammy the goldfish in my parents? kitchen is not the same goldfish that Mum gave me to look after when she and Dad were in Egypt.
Secrets from her boyfriend: I weigh one hundred and twenty-eight pounds. Not one eighteen, like Connor thinks. I?ve always thought Connor looks a bit like Ken. As in Barbie and Ken.
From her colleagues: When Artemis really annoys me, I feed her plant orange juice. (Which is pretty much every day.) It was me who jammed the copier that time. In fact, all the times.
Secrets she wouldn?t share with anyone in the world: My G-string is hurting me. I have no idea what NATO stands for. Or even what it is.
Until she spills them all to a handsome stranger on a plane. At least, she thought he was a stranger.
But come Monday morning, Emma?s office is abuzz about the arrival of Jack Harper, the company?s elusive CEO. Suddenly Emma is face-to-face with the stranger from the plane, a man who knows every single humiliating detail about her. Things couldn?t possibly get worse?Until they do.
