Book Reviews of Calculus For DummiesBook Review: Excellent results Summary: 5 Stars
I've always had issues truly retaining mathematical concepts. So naturally, when faced with having to take college calculus, I had mild reservations.
I purchased this book in January, before the spring semester started, and began tearing through the book, studying everything I could. As the semester progressed, all that my teacher was saying was crystal clear, and coincided perfectly with what this book was teaching.
By the end of the semester, I had not only dealt with calculus, but I actually appreciated the usefulness of it in everyday applications. This book is an absolute must for those who are timid when it comes to math. Want proof of it's success? I finished the class with a 97.5% - an A+!
Book Review: lifesaver Summary: 5 Stars
This book saved me! My first calc class blew me away i credit the teacher but no need for excuses. I did very poor on my first college calc exam then I dropped the class and read this book very intently until I got a good understanding of the calculus ideas. The author, Mark Ryan is brilliant, his credibility precedes him which is obvious. He is very easy to understand and cracks a lot of jokes though out the book. Two things to point out: I don't suggest skipping class and just reading this book it will not work because, use this as an aid if anything, also the book takes a while to go through and really understand all the steps in the example. Anyway great book, helped me get an A in calc I and II and hopefully III.
Book Review: Metaphors Summary: 5 Stars
I checked out several books from the library after reading "The Calculus Gallery." Newton made comments about terms in an infinite series that intrigued me. C4D explains & illustrates examples such that broader application is quickly made possible. Ryan has really cool visuals on pg. 25 -- for the non-mathematician to "zoom in." If u like koans, read the 1st paragraph on pg 210 -- it applies equally well from engineering to Buddhist meditation. This book may target the "dummy" audience but it is written by a true teacher -- inspired. Oh, and BTW Ryan makes the actual math of calc accessible. After browsing several, this is the book i bought for pleasurable dabbling.
Book Review: Essential to my passing grade Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished my first semester of Calculus, and I'm happy to say I did well. Ryan does an excellent job of presenting the idea of derivative as the tangent line to the slope of a curve, and reinforcement of this idea played an pivotal role in my understanding of the subject as a whole. Where other texts seem distant, and formulaic, (My textbook was terrible, and I didn't appreciate their attempts to hock additional good$ throughout) this book presents ideas in a less formal, approachable and common sense way. I appreciated that it's written from scratch, and not just another overpriced regurgitation of a previous textbook edition.
Book Review: Calculus for Dummies - Simpliest Calculus Book Out There Summary: 5 Stars
This is the most simpliest book on the most difficult math I've seen yet. This is great! I love it. It explains it in words that I can understand. Most of the books I have seen don't even come close. If you want to learn calculus, get this book! I recommend it. Highly!
For the longest time, when I read other books, I had a hard time understanding what y=3x+5 means (for example). This books explains that down to the detail where other books don't. And I am slow at learning math so this tells me from the starting point - which is exactly what I need. Otherwise, what's the point?
Great book!
