Book Reviews of Calculus For Dummies

Book Review: An easy to understand self-help guide for math students
Summary: 5 Stars

What makes Calculus for Dummies so enjoyable is the humor Mark Ryan often includes in his book. He has such an understanding of how stressful and difficult Calculus can be without tutoring and additional assistance. But the tutoring is exactly what Mr. Ryan provides, and he does so with great humor and wit. Even more, I suspect that he asks the reader or harried student to not take herself or himself too seriously.

Mark Ryan seems to have an uncanny sense of when the student is feeling scared of, or frustrated by, some intimidating problem or eerie looking equation. And it is at such times when he is gracious enough to let the student know that it's allright to be feeling scared. But he also lets the math student know that with a bit of humor and persistence he or she could certainly also reach that level of understanding which is is so obvious in the author.

Book Review: Great refresher for professionals and good supplement for students..
Summary: 5 Stars

I had studied calculus a decade back and haven't used much on day-to-day job. I bought this book to refresh myself and I am glad I chose this particular book. It's very simple and clear. I had done lot of calculus problems and understood the mathematical aspect of it. What I did not understand was basic fundamentals explaining why calculus works and what exactly it does in plain english. I like the way the author has put together the subject. I read this book from beginning to ending and found it very helpful.

If you are a student struggling to understand the calculus, this will help you undestand in plain and simple language. If you are a professional and have forgotten most of calculus you did long back, this will help you refresh your memory. Good thing about this book is, it is explained in a plain and simple way, so you won't feel it hard.

Book Review: get this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was lost in calculus here at Babson College and sinking fast. Nothing the teacher said made any sense. So I took a chance with Calculus for Dummies and it paid off! it's absolutely amazing. Concepts I couldn't even begin to understand in class and from the assigned book were explained so clearly and made it overall seem easy.

He also makes calculus seem easy through sarcasm which takes away some of the fears associated with calculus and I think that works wonders by appealing to your subconscious.

I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE learning calculus!

EDIT: I got my calculus 2nd exam score today. I went from being hopelessly lost 3 days before the test, and after a little studying of this book, I ended up with an 86 on the exam with a class average of 75! The proof is in the numbers. Do not miss out on this book.

Book Review: Calculus For Dummies
Summary: 5 Stars

In the world of engineering it's essential to know basic mathematics and calculus. For those of us just starting out in technical math, I can recommend three outstanding references. You cannot do better than this matched set; "Calculus For Dummies" and "The Idiots Guide To Calculus". Both are wonderfully lucid and yet cover the essentials. They should be bought as a set since they approach many concepts in ways that differ yet in a cooperative fashion. If your just starting out with calculus or just feel shaky on the basics I also very strongly recommend "Effortless Algebra" by Maran Publications. I call these books The Three Kings. The problem with math books generally, is that they are either trivial and aimed at children or are so daunting that they intimidate the math-impaired. These books strike that magic median. Thorough but accessible.

Book Review: Calculus translated into English
Summary: 5 Stars

Mark Ryan is the kind of author you wish you'd had as a teacher when you were struggling with this stuff in college. He makes a very difficult subject not only quite accessible, but almost fun.

I know that's a bit of a stretch for some to believe. But even if you're only hoping for an explanation that doesn't put you to sleep, this is your book.

I especially appreciated the memory aids he presented and the humor with which he dealt with the Math Police.

He gave enough detail on difficult concepts to be thorough without trying to impress you about how smart he is by overdoing it. That is a tough balance to reach, but I feel he succeeded.

One caveat: The workbook that goes with this text is pretty much essential to truly learning the subject and it's very reasonably priced.
