Book Reviews of Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods

Book Review: what a great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read a lot of outdoor books over the last 40 years, and this is one of the best. I am going to research the author, John J. Rowlands, because he was obviously a fascinating man who lead a very interesting life. This book tells about 12 months living in a cabin on a lake in Northern Onatario. At the time Rowlands was working as a timber cruiser, evaluating forests for use as lumber. He happened upon his ideal lake and was lucky enough to get stationed there by his company. He was also very lucky to have two great friends living within miles (within signaling distance via the various drums, horns etc. they engineered), on other little lakes. Together the three lived every outdoor boy's dream life of independence and adventure. This book has stuff about canoes, wild animals, sled dogs, snowshoes, knives, axes, the history of the lumber camps, and many boy-scout like craft projects. I just wish it was a lot longer.

Book Review: Living Well in the Wild
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read this book as a teenager and its with a sense of relief that I see its published again. The relief comes from the fact that a new generation of naturalists will be able to experience this book. I particulary recommend it for those people who are stuck in the city and have lost touch with what goes on in the wild during the cycle of the year. The illustrations range from cute and charming to beautiful black and white masterpieces of nature illustration. Rowlands style of writing is simple yet engaging, you never know when a hard won common sense lesson will creep into his narrative or when a bit of description will have your imagination relaxing into harmony with nature. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for either urban dwellers or nature lovers who get away to the deep woods often (and want to deepen their own appreciation some more)

Book Review: He painted a picture of a world I love
Summary: 5 Stars

I was not more than 11 or 12 when I read this book the first time. I checked it out of the library so many times my parents bought me a copy for my birthday. Fifty years later I still have it and still reach for it when I want to be transported to a place of peace and quiet... or if I want to be reminded how to make a wind speed recorder, a pair of moccasins, or any number of things. I have spent time canoing in the Maine woods, and Rowlands writes about it knowingly and lovingly, and he writes well. And the illustrations! They are a joy. If there is a young person in your life, one who loves the North Woods or who you wish loved the North Woods, this book could well be a memorable gift. Sometimes I wish I had known Rowlands and Hank and the Chief... but then again I do know them.

Book Review: Honest account of life in the north woods in a simpler time
Summary: 5 Stars

The first 12 chapters are the 12 months. Rowland lived the country, learned a tremendous amount from an Indian Chief who lived across Cache Lake. He weaves the mythology of the region in with the account of a year's life and adds in how to make the things you'd need to live simply in the wilderness. The drawings in the book are wonderful - much better than having photos, because they convey the simplicity of life he lived. This book is really great for young readers who would like to get a glimpse of life long ago out in the woods. It has the same magical effect on us urban or suburban folks who long for no traffic (NO CARS!), work that has an immediate result like getting in firewood, smoking fish for winter food and for the skills to live in the wilderness.

Book Review: The dream of every young boy
Summary: 5 Stars

Back in th early sixities I found an old well used copy of this book in a library. It became my bible. I was raised in the outdoors in cabin, in the high mountians. This book give me dreams of exciting things to do, I aquired this book for my own and lent it out to young boys as I grew up. Then it got lost my heart was broke for I wanted my sons to day dream as I did . I am like an old Peter Pan fan , As long as this book is around I will never grow up ,and wish all the young outdoors men the same.
