Book Reviews of By the Great Horn Spoon!

Book Review: Review from Laura Miller in TED 451
Summary: 5 Stars

By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman is an awesome book about the California Gold Rush because it mixes humor and history in a very fast paced plot about a boy and his butler mining for gold. It contained accurate historical information about miners, panning for gold, and the types of things that happened to miners during the Gold Rush without boring the reader with dates and facts.

The story is about a young boy named Jack and his butler Praiseworthy who stow away on a boat bound for San Fransisco. It started off funny and over the top from the very beginning when Praiseworthy marches right up to the captain of the ship and announces that he and Jack are stowaways. The characters are so likeable that even the fearsome Captain doesn't have the heart to make them walk the plank. In the story, Jack's parents died and he's living with his Aunt, who is having money problems. He leaves for California with plans to strike it rich mining for gold so she won't have to sell their home. The first half of the story takes place aboard a ship on their journey to California and contains a cast of very colorful characters who have all sorts of humorous misfortunes and stories to tell. Once they arrive in San Fransisco, Jack and Praisworthy must travel to the mining fields and overcome many problems to pan for gold with all of the other miners. In a particularly funny moment of ingenuity, Praiseworthy gives free haircuts to all of the miners to raise money for their travel by sifting the gold dust out of the chopped off hair.

I'm much older than the intended audience for this book but really enjoyed reading it because it was easy to read and written in a style that teachers, parents and children can appreciate. There were a lot of ironic twists that actually had me laughing out loud. In particular, when Praisworthy and Jack are robbed when riding on a stagecoach to the mining fields; however, proper and quiet Praiseworthy punches one of the robbers with his glove filled with gold dust and knocks him across the hill. Praiseworthy seems as surprised by his actions as the robbers who leave fairly quickly without hurting anyone. It was also amusing how Cut Eye Higgins gets what he deserves when robbers steal the map that he stole from someone else on the boat.

Overall, this was a very entertaining and educational book that I would recommend to students and adults who are interested in learning about the Gold Rush or who are just interested in reading a funny book.
