Book Reviews of Buddhism Plain and Simple

Book Review: Plain and Simple? Maybe not
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is one of the most life altering reads of My 55years. My Ego is strong and my soul is steeped in the academic knowledge of Western Culture. Steve Hagan succeeds in explaining the Buddha's transformation to enlightenmemt and his affect upon his contemporary world and the following 2500 years of human existence without preaching and with respect for other philosophical concepts. I can honestly say my life has been made better and happier by the experience of reading this book.

Book Review: First Amazon Review
Summary: 5 Stars

A moving book!!! Written in a style as plain as a Midwestern prairie. Sorry, couldn't resist!!! I got a so-called Little Book of Wisdom by the Dalia Lama, which was 400 pages long. It turned out to be a good introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. But for more of a transformative read like the Power of Now, get this book. What Steve Hagen teaches could be called Experiential Buddhism. If you were a fan of the Kung Fu TV series way back in the 70's...then this is right up your alley.

Book Review: Excellent overview of Buddhism
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read several other books on the topic of Buddhism, but this is the first one I've read that really provides a helpful explanation of its concepts, principles, and views of the world. I have read this book cover to cover twice, and I'm going to read it at least once more before I go back to exploring the more esoteric books on the subject. If you are interested in understanding the Buddhist view of the world, I heartily recommend this book as an excellent starting point.

Book Review: Explains Buddhism easily but not condescendingly.
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book when it first came out and since that time have recommended to many friends who expressed an interest in Buddhism. Even as a Buddhist, some of the books that come out seem incredibly complex, and I have trouble figuring out what they're trying to say. (And, let's face it, one of the beauties of Buddhism is its simplicity.) This book clarifies the important parts of the religion/philosophy in an easy to understand way while never being condescending.

Book Review: Clear, concise and objective
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading so many Buddhist texts and being frequently confused by the profound yet ambiguous explanations, I found this book extremely refreshing and simple. It is by far the clearest explanation of the Buddha's teachings that I have read. Hagen clarifies these seemingly simple yet complex thoughts, while maintaining a high level of objectivity.

Other Buddhist writers, and philosophy writers would be well advised to adopt the style used by this author.
