Book Reviews of Buddhism Plain and SimpleBook Review: changed my life. Summary: 5 Stars
i first read this book almost a decade ago, and upon the initial read i must say it was one of the most profound moments in my life. Hagen is direct. Its a fantastic introduction to the core of Buddhism leaving all the "cultural trappings" behind.
For a better understanding for meditation i would highly suggest checking out "Beyond the Breath" by Marshall Glickman or "Breath By Breath" by Larry Rosenberg, albeit the instructions Hagen provides or sufficient.
Dhamma.org would be another place to look if you're wanting to get serious about practice.
Book Review: For Those Who've Been Ridiculed & Chastised Summary: 5 Stars
This is the book I would recommend to any Buddhist who is getting a hard time from family and friends who think they have joined some kind of satanic cult or otherwise become a religious weirdo of some sort. The title of the book fits perfectly-its straight forward, non esoteric approach must surely be appealing to both the curious and the practioner. Yet few long-time practioners would become "too smart" for it. I would call it a library cornerstone. I've read from it regularly and am the better for it.
Book Review: Plain and Simple...Exactly Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this book in an effort to seek a better understanding of Buddhism without feeling like an idiot because of a lack of spiritual training. It was the best book I could have chosen. Coming from a Catholic background I was a bit hesitant about reading this book; however, I found that it's simplicity enlightens the reader and gives a better understanding of the principles of Buddhism. It was a gentle approach that let the reader become aware of the basic values and teachings of Buddhism. A very quick and spiritually rewarding read.
Book Review: Enlightenment without trying Summary: 5 Stars
I've read a number of books about Zen and Buddhism, and feel that this is about the best. Especially for someone like me with a basic understanding this was very helpful. Hagen sets out the history of Buddhism and with few words spells out how you and I can find peace of mind and gain wisdom through simple practices, and without the need of a "guru", "teacher", or "spiritual guide". The author has a clear writing style that gets directly to the point without trying to be too cute or complex. I would recommend this book to any friend.
Book Review: A wonderful book Summary: 5 Stars
I picked up this book to glean some insight into the beliefs of other religions in the world (I was raised in the Christian faith). I did this because I felt like I was lacking something spiritually and because I see this same lacking in so many others. I had no idea how much what Mr. Hagen wrote would liberate me . Steve Hagen has done an excellent job of laying out the basics of the Buddhist philosophy (which to my surprise closely mirrors my own). I highly recommend this book! And Mr. Hagen - if you are reading this.....thanks:)
