Book Reviews of Buddhism Plain and Simple

Book Review: awakening
Summary: 5 Stars

i read this book with two or three misconceptions about Buddhism, but this book dealt with that problem and more.
basically, I thought buddhism is a pagan religion, and that it is indeed a religion. that the followers of Buddhism are most likely to be silent people, or wishing to live in complete solitude. But truthfully, that all is contrary to the real buddhists, and some who practice it right now are misinformed/created their own ideas about a religion even older than Christianity. a religion that is not a religion, but more of a philosophy. that makes you be here now, and not there, nor forward.
the book is brilliant for a simple and plain view, but very well written that makes you want to go into deeper reading.

Book Review: A beautiful overview of a complex subject, but may not be the best introduction to Buddhism for some readers.
Summary: 5 Stars

This eloquent little book gives even a casual student of Buddhism a very readable and provocative overview of a very complex subject. Having said that, the fact is that one needs a certain mindset to begin the study of Eastern philosophies, so while the author does present the material in plain and simple language, if you have not done any other reading on the subject, you may find it a bit of a tough go. While I recommend this book highly and have given away numerous copies to friends who have expressed an interest, there are other introductory books such as "The Buddha In Your Mirror" by Hochswender, Martin & Morino, for those readers who would benefit from a more structured and practical initial presentation of the subject.

Book Review: Eye Opening
Summary: 5 Stars

Being one who has been jaded by the dogmatic practices of the Christian religion, I could appreciate Mr. Hagen's no-nonsense look at Buddhism (or, shall i say, the Buddha-Dharma). Hagen's introduction to Buddhism is through the Four Noble Truths, the very basis of the Buddha's teaching. Using concrete examples of the meaning behind many of these concepts, Mr. Hagen is able to allow the reader to embark on awakening. While there are many more concepts behind Buddhism that are discussed in this book, it encouraged me to use it only as a raft to help cross the stream (and thus experience the teachings for myself). An excellent read if you are new to Buddhism and are looking to transform your pain and suffering into love and joy.

Book Review: Could be simple
Summary: 5 Stars

Get this book. I mean, buy it this moment. This book explained some very difficult concepts in some very easy ways. Even if you even have a clear understanding of these concepts you'll enjoy this book, as it will give you a better way to communicate these ideas to others.

I should mention I have given this book to friends and they have had trouble with it. I think 3 out of 5 people can't use this as a Buddhist primer. However, if you've got a C of better in a community college philosophy class, you should do fine with this it. I'd give it a shot, no matter what you think your ability to understand is. As something contained in this book may really speak to you, and serve to help unravel even more.

Book Review: Fabulous book
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently gave my last well-worn copy of this book, Buddhism Plain and Simple, to a valued friend, so I needed to purchase another copy for myself (and I have given several copies to others over the years). If you are curious about Buddhism, if you have some questions you want answered in (truly) plain and simple language, this book will become a treasure for you. Please, buy this book! It's written by an American and is very accessible. Give it to yourself for the holidays. Give it to your friends who are curious, or who might be curious, as a very special gift. Well-written, easy to understand yet respectful of all the ideas and traditions, this book is one of my ten favorite books of all time.
