The story, "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis, is a great book for children and adults. This book was on many reading lists, and also had a "yearling newberry award", so I decided to give this book a try. As I read the book, I could not put it down, and I guarantee that the same thing would happen to you. "Bud, Not Buddy" is about a boy (an orphan) who takes an adventure from Flint, Michigan to Grand Rapids, to meet his father, Herman E. Calloway, who is the world's best jazz musician. Bud meets many new people along the way,who help him. Will Bud find his "father", if Herman E. Calloway is actually his father? Find out in this adventurous and unforgettable novel!
Book Review: Yay for Bud! Summary: 5 Stars
Welcome to the world of the heyday of jazz. The year is 1936, and the world is open to a young orphan who has happened to find himself on the run.
Curtis writes with zesty personality for Bud and paints a portrait of a very likeable young boy who simply wants what all of us want: a family. He's a great kid with plenty of sass who is ready to take on the world and do what he needs to do to find himself his biological father.
Curtis does an excellent job of painting the culture, joys, and hardships of this time period even as they are combined with Bud's wild imagination.
Plenty of fun and heart, even for adults.
Book Review: One book but 1Million Life Lessons Summary: 5 Stars
This book is absolutely fantastic because it packs so many life lessons in a story that you start to have a new outlook on life. Also, this story is a tremendous page-turner because you never know what Bud is going to do next. I really enjoyed reading this because I could really relate to Bud in so many ways I lost count. For example we both have a family member who it is really hard to get along with even though we try our hardest to get along with them. So if you are person who really enjoys reading between the lines in books then I would highly recommend this amazing story!
Book Review: Required reading for the human race Summary: 5 Stars
This first person account is simply written. Yet, there is nothing more that is needed to convey the rich message within Bud, Not Buddy. I read this book to help my ASD son with his school assignment and loved it. I believe that this should be required reading for the human race. The messages of tolerance, kindness, and understanding are universal and would do our world an immense amount of good.
Furthermore, this book is a great way to make an era children cannot possible fathom more real.
Book Review: Serious book hilariously written Summary: 5 Stars
Not everyone can take a serious subject and make it hilarious. The author is truly gifted. The protagonist Bud is an orphan under such miserable circumstances, yet his take on life is very realistic and humorous. The tale is told with total honesty, from Bud's point of view. My child and I both really enjoyed the book, laughed together - and several times, lost our breath laughing. I don't remember losing my breath laughing while reading a book. A must-read for parents and children alike.
