Brown bear, Brown bear, What do you see?
I see my 6 month old son clutching one of his favorite books and chewing on the cardboard corners after I've read it for the 14th time.
Red Bird, Red Bird, What do you see?
It's almost 2 years later and a new copy is being clutched by my daughter as she teethes on the cardboard corners after my wife has read it again for the 14th time.
My kids love this book.
For the brightly colored illustrations.
For the sing-song pattern of the questions and answers.
And, yes, for the dense cardboard corners that they've gnawed, and drooled, and teethed on as they held one of their favorite books close.
I highly recommend Brown Bear, Brown Bear for your young children!

Book Review: Captures his attention when nothing else will

I love sitting with my son reading this book. The sing-song of the text has been perfect for capturing his attention from age 6 months to 19 months and counting. The illustrations are very simple, and Carle did great to have someone else write the text for him. I have a couple other Carle books my son won't sit through, but this is by far one of his favorite books of all time.
It's so easy, even my husband is willing to read it to him. My son loves to turn the pages and will sit on the floor by himself and look for his favorite animals.
Plan ahead and buy multiple copies: I agree with another reviewer who had to replace a copy he had -- it gets read SO MUCH that, as well constructed as it is, the board book still goes to pieces over time.

Book Review: Teaches Colors and Animals!

I taught kindergarten before my daughter was born, and a veteran teacher suggested using this book to help my students learn their colors. I was amazed at how well it worked! The children were so captivated by the flowing, rhyming text that they did not realize they were learning their colors! What's more, they loved the book so much that they wanted to learn how to read, so they could read it by themselves or to younger siblings at home. Even before my daughter was born, I bought a copy of this book for her. We read it almost daily. By the time she was 1 1/2, she could name the animals, recognize colors, and find the teacher at the back of the book! I highly recommend this book to parents and educators. as part of the bedtime routine for my now 18 mo old boy. Of course, I am able to recite it by rote after oh, about 10,000 times. I don't even have to pay attention any more, as he knows where to turn the pages. Why do I keep doing this night after night? Because every time I ask him if he's ready for his story, he giggles with delight and runs to get Brown Bear, and Goodnight Moon, the other book of our nightly ritual. Brown Bear always comes first, Goodnight Moon always comes last. In between, we vary it with others, like Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear; Quick as a Cricket; Are You My Mother; The Very Hungry Caterpillar; Thomas the Tank Engine; etc. I love Brown Bear for making that sweet little boy express such delight at reading it.Book Review: Another Classic From Carle

I've had three children who fell in love with this book around age two. It does a wonderful job of teaching colors, animals and rhyme to toddlers.Aided by Carle's unique illustrations, this book begs to be chanted by the parent who will be reading it for the umpteenth time. ("Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me. Red bird, red bird, what do you see? I see a ....." etc., etc.) The cadence and rhythm of the words have fascinated my youngsters as they learn to identify different colored animals populating the pages of the book. Strictly a teaching tool, the book does not have a story per se, but it seems to be just right for the child who is just beginning to discover the larger world.
