Book Reviews of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Book Review: Book to Begin On
Summary: 5 Stars

Books for young children should be both enjoyable and predictable. Bill Martin, Jr.'s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? is exactly that. Children will enjoy the patterns, the colors, and the animals. The first predictable feature of the book is its title, which is the opening line of the story: "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?" Pictured on the first and second pages is in fact a brown bear, who replies, "I see a red bird looking at me." The next two pages predictably show a red bird. "Red bird, red bird, what do you see?" He replies, "I see a yellow duck looking at me." This question and answer format continues throughout the story. Children will quickly learn the patterns and after having heard or read the story once or twice, will undoubtedly follow along.

The book is a concept book as it teaches children common colors and animals. Colors mentioned include brown, red, yellow, blue, green, purple, white, and black. Animals mentioned include a bear, a bird, a duck, a horse, a frog, a cat, a dog, a sheep, a goldfish, and a monkey. The story ends with, "Monkey, monkey, what do you see?" He responds, "I see children looking at me." There are pictures of children of different genders and ethnic groups, which is something to look for when evaluating illustrations in children's books. Then, the children reply that they see a brown bear, a red bird, a yellow duck, a blue horse, a green frog, a purple cat, a white dog, a black sheep, a goldfish, and a monkey looking at them. This conclusion is a creative way of summarizing the entire book in just two pages. Seeing and hearing the animals and colors again will reinforce the content to the children.

Eric Carle's pictures are perhaps the most important part of the book. Imagine reading a book about animals and colors with neither the animals nor the colors shown. How will children easily grasp what the animal looks like if they cannot see it? How will children easily grasp what a certain color is if they cannot see it? Carle's pictures are large and bright, which are important in grabbing and keeping the children's attention. As each picture takes up two pages, they are also helpful when reading the book as a class.

Summary of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck--all parade across the pages of this delightful book. Children will immediately respond to Eric Carle's flat, boldly colored collages. Combined with Bill Martin's singsong text, they create unforgettable images of these endearing animals.

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame.
