Book Reviews of Brother Odd (Odd Thomas Novels)

Book Review: Odd is back, for another adventure...
Summary: 5 Stars

Well ok! Oddie is back for a third "manuscript", and it's a darn good one. I'm glad that Dean has created this character, and decided to make several books with this wonderful protagonist. This review might be a little long-winded (as mine usually are) but oh well. I will start with the criticism:

Dean, why oh why must Odd explain that he sees dead people in the first 20-40 pages of each Odd novel? WE KNOW. :) Please stop insulting your faithful readers, and take the liberty of assuming that we know how to read in order. Sure, some random people might just pick up one of the books out of sequence, but if they can't piece together the concepts without Odd explaining it, they shouldn't be reading in the first place. By Odd rehashing the fact that he sees dead people, he was in love with a girl named Stormy, he has a friend named little Ozzie, etc. etc. etc.... in the beginning of every single book, you're making Odd seem somewhat condescending to his readers. "As I have mentioned in a previous manuscript..." ....Enough already! We read them, obviously. We know about the bodachs. We know some kid got hit by a truck when he mentioned them. But somehow I'm guessing when I read the 4th Odd novel, I'm going to hear it all again. Ugh. If you're writing it now Dean, please don't do this the 5th, too. (side note- I doubt Dean himself will read this review but there is always that chance. :) If I were an author, I would read all my reviews).

Oookaay now onto the positive review! This is almost on par with the original Odd Thomas. We were briefly let down by Forever Odd, when Odd wandered through a tunnel and basically up an elevator, and it took an entire novel to do it. We lusted briefly for the female villain and fantasized about being one of her "horses", and then it was over. I almost wished Odd -had- died in the 2nd one because it would've made a 2 star novel into a 4-star with the tragic ending. But I'm glad that Dean kept him around, because now we had the joy of finding Odd amongst monks, far from Pico Mundo. The setting is wonderful- snow storms, nuns and monks, the abbey, the remoteness of it all, and the deep dark mystery of Brother John's "mew".

The philosophy of this novel is similar to the concepts introduced in From the Corner of His Eye, the Door to December, or even the ending of the Seize the Night/Fear Nothing books. Physics are toyed with on a quantum level, and tied in with spiritual purpose and preternatural intentions. The power of human thought alone is related to the structure of the entire universe, and I think Dean is reminding us all just how intelligent he really is.

I won't go into plot details because I don't think that summarizing what happens in the book is necessary, suffice to say that Odd goes on another amazing journey, and although his "Manuscripts" really have only provided insight into 1-2 days of his life at a time, (a minor flaw in the logistics), I am writing this to let you know that you are in for another great read with this book, from the first-person perspective (which I am now starting to think is utilized in some of his best novels).

5 star read, just as good as the first, minus the love story though. :( Quantum physics, mystery, and a very esoteric Russian all make this book propel the Odd series forwards, as successful saga. I would say this is Koontz' challenge to King's "Dark Tower" series, although the two are completely different (of course), we are to expect about the same amount of books.

Summary of Brother Odd (Odd Thomas Novels)

Loop me in, odd one. The words, spoken in the deep of night by a sleeping child, chill the young man watching over her. For this was a favorite phrase of Stormy Llewellyn, his lost love, and Stormy is dead, gone forever from this world. In the haunted halls of the isolated monastery where he had sought peace, Odd Thomas is stalking spirits of an infinitely darker nature. . . .Brother Odd.

Through two New York Times bestselling novels, Odd Thomas has established himself as one of the most beloved and unique fictional heroes of our time. Now, wielding all the power and magic of a master storyteller at the pinnacle of his craft, Dean Koontz follows Odd into a singular new world where he hopes to make a fresh beginning?but where he will meet an adversary as old and inexorable as time itself.
