Book Reviews of Brighton Rock (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

Book Review: Take a trip to Graham Greeneland by paying a visit to Brighton the seaside resort where evil and good battle over the human soul
Summary: 5 Stars

Graham Greene (1904-1991) is one of Great Britain's greatest twentieth century authors. "Brighton Rock is an early Greene novel first appearing in 1938. It has become an enduring classic being discovered by new generations of fascinated fans.
The Plot: At the center of the novel is the nefarious face of Pinkie Brown. Pinkie is a 17 year old hoodlum who murders two people; marries a 16 year girl named Rose (so she won't be obligated to testify against him at a possible future trial) and is a poor leader of a gang consisting of Dickensian characters: Dallow; Spicer and the lawyer Prewitt. Pinkie does not smoke, drink or have romantic relationships with women. He was a witness to parents lovemaking routine on Saturday nights which repulsed him and turned him against sex. He talks his new wife Rose into a suicide pact. His chief opponent is Ida Arnold a florid denizen of Brighton. Ida is a middle aged amorous singer who spent a Michalmas holiday afternoon with Charles Hale. Hale was murdered by Pinkie's gang. She plays the role of Good/Nemesis who defeats the evil Pinkie. Brighton Rock refers to a seaside taffy which Pinkie uses to stuff down the throat of unwilling victims. The rocks at Brighton Beach also play a role in the plot.
This noirish tale is redeemed by:
a. Greene's elegant literary style lavish in the use of metaphorical poetic language.
b. The theological subtext of the 269 page novel. Both Pinkie and Rose are Roman Catholics who deal with questions of morality and the fate of the soul. A recurring phrase "between the stirrup and the ground" refers to the opportunity human beings have to repent.
c. Greene voices the uncertainties of life and the angst found in modern man.
d. Greene is an expert at the working class language used by the inhabitants of Brighton (American readers may wish to picture Brighton as an English version of Atlantic City. It is located south of London on the coast.
e. Greene can produce taut short scenes which make Brighton Rock reminiscent of a film narrative.
f. Greene uses British expressions which may be unfamliar to American readers.
The Penguin Deluxe Editon of Brighton Rock is an oversized paperback which is well done.

Summary of Brighton Rock (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

Graham Greene's chilling exposé of violence and gang warfare in the pre-war underworld is a classic of its kind.

Pinkie, the teenage gangster, is devoid of compassion or human feeling, despising weakness of the spirit or of the flesh. Responsible for the razor slashes that killed Kite and also for the death of Hale, he is the embodiment of calculated evil. As a Catholic, however, he is convinced that his retribution does not lie in human hands.

He is therefore not prepared for Ida Arnold, Hale's avenging angel. Ida, whose allegiance is with life, the here and now, has her own ideas about the circumstances surrounding Hale's death. For the sheer joy of it she takes up the challenge of bringing the infernal Pinkie to an earthly kind of justice.
