Book Review: Bitter and Depressing

I read this book years ago, when I was in the intended age group. It's one of the few books from grade school I remember, because the way I felt about it was so strong. I liked it at first. The plot was touching and interesting.
The problem was the end. It was bitter and depressing, and left me with a more negative worldview. To me this book was about a damaged boy finding someone who could truly understand him and bring light to his life, only to have this happiness savagely torn away from him. It sent the message that even when you find something amazing in life, you can't trust it to last.
