Book Reviews of Brett Manning's Singing SuccessBook Review: "Jaime Vendera, Author of Raise Your Voice" Summary: 5 Stars
If I'm going to be honest about this review, I must be completely, and brutally honest. My initial reaction when first reading about the Singing Success program was "There is no way I would pay $199.00 for a book and some vocal training Cds." So, when I received my package, I was disappointed to learn that the Singing Success system consisted of a book with less than 20 pages, with 12 CDs and a video tape...But, soon changed my opinion.
As I read the booklet, I thought to myself, "Wow. There is a lot of information in so few pages. I like it; concise, and informative. Maybe there is more to this program than I`m giving credit." Brett explained the simple principle of how it is physically possible to extend your range with ease. This technique is unknown to most vocal coaches, even though it is a simple physical fact. The booklet also explains other vocal related topics, such as, the vocal registers, the resonators of the body, correct breathing technique, nutrition and health, vocal terminology, correct vowel patterns, and presents a singer's checklist, for understanding your instrument, both physically, emotionally, and mentally...And that's just 16 pages! (Including the Intro and credits)
The video is a one on one interview with Brett. Brett explains his technique and shows examples through live footage of some of his students. (I forgot to mention that Brett had said in the interview that the reason he kept the book so short was because research showed that people preferred to be taught voice through video and audio as opposed to reading. He felt he could help people to better understand through 12 CDs as opposed to 200 pages.)
These students were some of the most amazing singers I have ever heard. Each and every one of them sounded better than anyone I have heard on American Idol. Brett taught these singers to sing with little effort, no matter how high or how low the pitch. He was able to help each singer develop their voice potential, improve the sound of their voice, add vibrato, and develop their style. It was very interesting!
As I listened to Brett's interview, I realized that he is very passionate about voice training. He is very sincere about teaching quality principals and helping students reach their maximum voice potential, in minimal time, which is a trait very rare in vocal teachers. Most vocal teachers want to keep you coming back for years, draining your pocket.
Next on my itinerary was studying Brett's exercise program. The only way I could make an accurate review was to actually practice the exercises myself. The 1st Cd in the series focused on a thorough explanation of vocal terminology and the principle techniques of Brett's method. Brett also demonstrates his amazing 5 octave range, which you can hear on his website. In the 2nd CD, Brett focused on the top 10 difficulties of singing, covering topics such as; fixing the vocal break, developing vibrato, and increasing vocal power. There is also a guest narration by vocal and style coach, Dave Brooks. Dave discusses the inner game of singing; discussing the attitude of the artist, and how this affects the singer's instrument. David also covers finding your own individual style, and how most singers make the mistake of trying to emulate other artists.
CD's 3-8 focus on exercises to improve vocal technique. The exercises are systematic, focusing on improving your voice and developing untrained muscles over 6 sessions. The exercises were designed to gradually improve your range, vibrato, tone and power. I was very impressed by the exercises. Each exercise builds upon the latter, giving your voice a complete workout by the end of the session.
I have tried so many vocal exercise programs in the last 15 years that I have grown tired of practicing vocal scales on a CD or tape. Brett's system helped to put the fun back into practice that I had been missing. I believe that this is because of his methodical approach to practice. He continually changes the scales and vocal sounds, to keep vocal practice boredom from setting in. The lessons will definitely eliminate any vocal breaks, help you to develop vibrato, and increase your range, tone, and power.
CDs 9-11 delved into a new area that I have not yet found in another vocal program; Exercises for developing style and vocal licks. The program covers licks for blues, R&B, pop, country, and gospel styles. A few examples of the licks covered, are bending notes and singing triplet notes. The Style sessions are very beneficial for any singer who wishes to develop their chosen style to their fullest potential.
The last CD in the series presents the student with 2 original songs for the singer to sing along to, in order to practice applying the techniques from the Singing Success program. If you have studied the program thoroughly and practiced religiously, then you will ace this final test! In all of my reviews of vocal books and methods since I have started studying voice, I can honestly say that this program is one of the most informative and comprehensive, vocal improvement methods I have ever read and tried. Over-all I have to give this program an A+.
