Customer Review: Usual, competent Stackpole

It's always amusing to see Michael A. Stackpole portray Victor Steiner-Davion as the greatest man in the universe despite his general incomptence, twisted morality and lack of likeability. Thankfully Victor rarely appears in this book."Bred for War" has many different storylines, all competently handled, that advance the general history of the Inner Sphere in 3057. Don't even think about reading this book if you're not familiar with the BattleTech setting. We have the resurgence of the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League, the Refusal War between Clan Wolf and Clan Jade Falcon, and the widespread turmoil caused by the afore-mentioned Victor's stupid choices. There's a well-balanced mix of action and intrigue, none of it particularly gripping - but like I said, this is standard, competent Stackpole. You don't expect the Earth and you don't get it, either.
The stand-out is the storyline involving the planet Zurich and Noble Thayer, a writer looking for a quiet hideaway who turns out to be much more than he seems when a revolution sweeps through. This would have been worth a book on its own.
One final point. When is Stackpole going to learn something - anything - about women's clothes?
