Book Reviews of BreathlessBook Review: This is a great sci-fi novel Summary: 5 Stars
Dean Koontz has written a different kind of novel than his usual and he has hit it out of the park. As we see what is happening in the world, our economy, our government, the environment, I think many of us know we are have entered uncharted territory. BREATHLESS brings us into this strange new world and creates a possible alternative to disaster in the characters who are touched by two extraordinary beings that change everything. The animals are the first to sense the change and to go into a kind of momentary trance. Grady, a man who has given up on people and lives a solitary life with his dog, is the first to see two amazing creatures cavorting playfully in the woods. He is alarmed because they aren't like any animal he has ever seen before. They can move so fast they become a blur. Their huge eyes glow in the dark and change colors. He doesn't know if he is in danger or not but his dog seems unafraid -- just curious. Eventually Grady decides to take a chance as the creatures circle his house at night and their strangeness has him intrigued. He opens his door and he and his dog go outside where they are vulnerable to attack if that is what is on the creatures minds. But they seem benign and they are at the moment -- they begin playing with Grady's dog. Grady sees that the two creatures are unlike any creatures he has ever seen. They are the size of a dog but their front paws are not paws but hands. Grady calls a young woman, a vet, who is a friend, and tells her to come over immediatly. She has to see these animals that are in his house! She does and she too sees that these animals are nothing like any animals that exist, to her knowledge. Something has definatly changed and it will change everything and everyone. There is a killer on the loose who has murdered his twin brother and plans to kill many more people. There is a disturbed alcoholic who lives in a cave in California and sets out on a journey home where he hasn't been in many years. There is a genius in a Casino who can count cards from a six deck shoe and gives his winnings away to people who need it. What they have to do with the plot is only revealed at the end when everything and everyone that seem unrelated come together to affect each others lives in unsuspecting ways. This is really a science fiction novel, and perhaps, the first one that Koontz has written in this genre although Mr. Murder is a sci-fi novel in a way. I don't want to spoil the plot and if you want to read what happens there are other reviews that do a better job than I have the desire to do. But I assure you this is an exciting and provacitive novel that you won't be able to put down once you start reading it. It is scary and in the end hopeful. In this day and age we can use a little hopefulness. Hats off to Mr. Koontz.
