Book Reviews of Boy Drinkers

Book Review: Boy Drinkers
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a fan of Terence Winch's writing and music. I enjoyed his last book, "This Special Place: New World Irish Stories" and had been eagerly awaiting a new one. "Boy Drinkers" was worth waiting for; and although I wanted to savor the words, I found myself rushing through it, excited to get on to the next poem and the story it told. Reading these poems, I felt I learned a lot about what it must been to grow up Catholic and Irish during an era when great changes were taking place in this country and when many young people were beginning to seriously challenge the beliefs of their ancestors.

The characters of Winch's poems - authoritarian and sometimes cruel, strange, impassive or sometimes surprisingly compassionate - enter and exit quickly, just as each poem's mood changes rapidly from page to page. I found myself marveling at the wide range of emotions that Winch's poems evoked in me: mournfulness, wistfulness, sadness and - sometimes surprising in the midst of pathos - mirth. Because I like Winch's wry sense of humor, I especially enjoyed "Ceremony" and "Sinning."

One doesn't have to be Irish or Catholic to enjoy this book (I am neither). The experiences and the accompanying emotions that Winch uncovers for us in his poetry are universal ones: the pain of losing a loved one, the confusion and rebelliousness most young people encounter as they reach for adulthood - sometimes with some very rough times along the way--, and the ever-present conflicts that I believe most of us have felt between religious and cultural upbringings that were forced upon us. Terence Winch is a consummate storyteller, someone who draws the reader into his world and leaves this reader, at least, wanting more. Once again, I cannot wait for his next book.

Summary of Boy Drinkers

This recent collection from acclaimed poet, musician, and fiction writer Terence Winch reaches down to the roots of the contemporary Irish-American experience. In Boy Drinkers, Terence Winch---with singular poignancy, wit, and clarity---draws on his upbringing in the Bronx in the 1950s and '60s to bring to life an Irish Catholic world of guilt and choice, debt and legacy, and the betrayals of belief that shake the self to the core.

Winner of the American Book Award for his poetry collection Irish Musicians/American Friends and of the Columbia Book Award for The Great Indoors, and grant recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fund for Poetry, and the Maryland State Arts Council, Terence Winch is recognized as a significant presence in the literary community. Winch---also known as a songwriter with his celebrated band, Celtic Thunder---has been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and numerous times on Garrison Keillor's "Writer's Almanac." He is also the recipient of a Gertrude Stein Award for Innovative Writing.
