Book Reviews of the Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life

Customer Review: Dissapointed, wanted so much more, got a book written close to the vest
Summary: 2 Stars

Being a fan of Steve Martin I was eager to get this book. That I learned he was doing the reading on the Audio version made me get this to listen to on my iPod. At the end of listening my first thought was 'Gee, I paid $14.75 for this?" (price at the time of purchase). I like to hear peoples stories to be entertained AND most importantly, to learn from their lives and grow and incorporate great habits into my life, or at least gain major insite into their lives and ways of thinking.

- Short of Steve doing his comedy bits he pretty well reads it in a monotone, like he had no real emotional investment in what he wrote.
- He talks about his demons a bit, which explains the monotone I suppose.
- He makes of point to say he keeps his private life private once he became famous. Maybe that is why he pretty well just tells you almost nothing about his personal or other parts of his life.
- I wasn't expecting him to tell all his dark secrets, I can sort of understand if he wants to keep quiet about his marriages and personal life and not say anything (yes, I like gossip like the next person) but he doesn't cover lots of things I would like to know about. Such as his having an IQ of genius and his reasons for not joining Mensa. Maybe sharing some adventures of being on set in his many movies (got to be some funny stories). Where you get your ideas or what is your creative process. Perhaps what your daily life is like. Something, anything, some sense of Steve Martin and his personality? Or did I miss it and Steve, outside of doing his comedy act is a withdrawn quiet individual who give you very little of himself?

In either case, it will be a book that will quickly fade from my memory. Sorry Steve, but you didn't really risk anything to make me enjoy you.
