Book Reviews of Born ConfusedBook Review: Not what it seems to be Summary: 5 Stars
Shallow and insipid is how I first saw this book. The eyes on the cover attracted me to it, so I looked at the front and the back. The blurb left me with the impression of a lame teenage "girly-girl" book: a sad attempt to be interesting, but in fact a shallow and boring novel.
Could I have been more wrong!
Browsing my school library, I happened upon this book again. I was bored, and the library has few interesting novels, so I pulled it off the shelf and looked at it again. Perhaps I'll give it a second chance, I thought. This time I opened the book to a random excerpt (her date at the movies) and though not completely dropping my impression of it, I immediately liked the way it was written. Dialogue is written without quotes but with dashes, as in many foreign languages. The language is precise and engaging, and though I hadn't fallen in with the book yet, I liked it enough to check it out.
It doesn't take too long to get into this book. This style and characters are very much alive, and though the novel deals with many serious issues, author Tanuja Desai Hidier has that special talent of still making readers laugh out loud.
It's funny, it's engaging, and it's deep. At first glance the book appears to be shallow, teenage crap, but instead it delves into numerous topics, and always leaving the reader thinking. For example, it discusses culture, identity, relationships, family, love, homosexuality, sexual identity, and drug use, just to name a few.
Besides the punctuation of dialogue, Hidier's writing style is unique. Her descriptions and word choices are different than in typical novels, making the book stand out not only in because of its content, but even simply as a piece of prose.
How does she do it? Hidier has managed to create a novel both happy and depressing - and overall very satisfying. This is one of the special books you adore while reading, think back on once finished, and don't hesitate to read again.
