Book Reviews of Book of the Dead (Kay Scarpetta, No 15)

Book Review: Don't bother
Summary: 1 Stars

It's not one of her best Scarpetta books - and it's the last book of Cornwell's I'll ever read. I'm sure Patricia would not pay me $10 ($9.99 plus tax actually) to find out my political beliefs, and I don't appreciate paying to find out hers. Her references to the President were not necessary and were not appreciated. There were opportunities for Ms. Cornwell to bring in the fact that Clinton liked to "be with" women besides his wife, and also that he lied under oath - that he has made a generation of teenagers think oral sex is not really sex. I hate that I won't know what happens to Marino, but I'm not paying Cornwell to find out what her politcal beliefs are. I wanted to be entertained and this book does not do it.

Book Review: She mailed this one in
Summary: 1 Stars

I've never written a review before, but I'm compelled to after reading this latest Scarpetta paperback. I've loved the character and this series from the get go, having read them all over the years. But this book is just plain stupid. It's weak, the plot development is ridiculous, the diagogue is absurd -- there are so many things wrong with this book on so many different levels. I actually wondered if Cornwell wrote this herself or if it was farmed out to a ghost writer. It's nowhere near the quality one has come to expect from Cornwell. A huge disappointment. I think Cornwell is just plain tired of this character and has flat run out of ideas. I'm disappointed and certainly don't recommend this book.

Book Review: Should be called Beating a Dead Horse
Summary: 1 Stars

I really wanted to give this book zero stars but they won't let you do that...

In looking back over the list of Scarpetta books, a series I fell in love with long ago, I find it difficult to remember the last one I enjoyed. The characters have no redeeming qualities anymore and are completely unlikeable.

I think it's sort of silly to continue coming back to them when this obviously is not going to change so I'll make this my last Scarpetta read. Cornwell would be better off killing them all spectacularly with no hope of resurrection so she could quit flogging them and move on to something else. Unless of course she's lost the muse. Hmmm, maybe that's the problem.

Book Review: Not what they used to be
Summary: 1 Stars

I have always enjoyed reading the 'Kay Scarpetta' novels, but something has happened and I just don't know if I will be continuing this series. First off, I didn't have enough closure for all the ties left, well, untied. Like Shandy, why in the heck did the Iraq serial killer not kill her of all people? Makes no sense. And what will happen to Shandy or Will Rambo? You never heard his point of view towards the end of the book. You just have to assume everything. I wanted to see Dr. Self actually lose it and become real and have her facade broken. But no, that isn't delved into either. Is it too much to expect the story line to come to a close and tie up all the loose ends?

Book Review: Loyalty Test
Summary: 1 Stars

This novel tests the loyalty of Kay Scarpetta followers. The third-person narration keeps the reader from getting close to the characters. We never get a feel for the killer--can't hate him, can't grudgingly respect the method to his madness, can't feel sorry for him; all because we know next to nothing about him. Can't really care about the victims, either. Of the recurring characters, only Marino (and Rose, to an extent) has texture, and even that is unsatisfying. The writing is cryptic. I could go on, but the bottom line is, you can skip this one. Bad Girls Finish First
