Book Reviews of Bone: One Volume Edition

Book Review: An epic tale that defies boundaries
Summary: 5 Stars

When Bone was first recommended to me by a friend I laughed and scoffed at the simplistic depictions of the "Bone" characters. "Is this Casper the Ghost meets The Lord of the Rings?" I asked. But then I gave it a chance and I'm glad I did.

This one volume edition has only one flaw. That the latter issues of the series are not presented in the full color in which they were originally published. However, if you're like me and haven't given this series a chance until now, you will not be disappointed.

The story begins simply enough and is somewhat light hearted for awhile. Then things take a turn for the dark and the characters are flung unwillingly into a vast and epic adventure. This story is suitable for children and adults alike.

If you're into graphic novels and you've been reading the likes of Frank Miller, Allen Moore etc. and you think that Bone is too childish for you, think again. I'm a happy convert.

Book Review: BONE is BEST
Summary: 5 Stars

I like BONE because it isn't pretentious or overly dramatic, yet still manages to be impactful. The sometimes-simple/sometimes-super-detailed art and light humor make it an amazing series.

Book Review: Overrated...
Summary: 3 Stars

I enjoyed this graphic novel. The book is a huge achievement when it comes to originality. Smith stews together humor, fantasy and heart together almost seamlessly. The art is also appropriate for this melting pot of genres. Crisp, clean drawing becomes ideal for moments of laughter and joy.

Unfortunately what lacks is depth. The fantasy isn't quite as satisfying or mythical as hoped. The humor, though gut-busting, is too infrequent to become a focal point of this work. And the characters, though touching, never develop as smoothly as they should.

Don't get too excited, but if graphic novels are your thing, it could be worth the time.

Book Review: A nice way to lose a weekend
Summary: 4 Stars

I had started reading Bone years ago, shortly after the series started. But being impatient by nature, couldn't wait for monthly installments. When the whole package came out, I ordered it. And very glad I did. To me, Bone is a light-hearted epic. Epic in that the story has breadth, depth, and grandeur but always undercut with humor. Just compare the rendering of the Bone creatures in a simple, clear cartoon form with the detailed and very emotive drawings of humans and others and you get a sense of the pervading complimentary aspects of this great story. To me, that is what makes Smith's work here so incredible. While this graphic novel may not have the impact of a Watchmen, Vendetta, or Sandman, his blend of humor, drama, horror, and fantasy make for a terrific read. I look forward to revisiting it time and again. If only to find "stupid, stupid, rat creatures!"

Book Review: The best graphic novel I have ever read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book has it all: it's funny, scary, action-packed and epic. I enjoyed it so much I have bought 3 more for friends this Christmas. It is magnificent!
