Book Review: An awfully cool paranormal mystery

I am not normally a paranormal fantasy reader. But some reviews of "Bone Crossed" intrigued me, so I thought I would give this book, authored by Patricia Briggs, a shot. And I'm pleased that I did. At the outset, I have to mention that it took me awhile to begin to get the rhythm of the book. If the reader has not read earlier works in the Mercy Thompson series (she's the central character of this book and the series), it is necessary to learn several different things at the same time. A. The nature of the characters, from werewolves to vampires and beyond. I have not read too many works focusing on such characters, but the characteristics of the various creatures in this volume are not the same as with other works (the vampires in the Georgina Kincaid series are not a bit like the vampires here). B. The biographies and relationships among the many characters in the novel take a while to learn. If one hasn't read earlier volumes, you almost need a scorecard to keep the different characters straight. C. The plot is complex and it does not always develop in a linear fashion.
The central character is Mercedes (Mercy to others) Thompson, a shapeshifter who can change into a coyote. She is a tough cookie and can handle herself awfully well. There is a lot of ambivalence in her dealing with others. In the last novel, as I understand it, she was assaulted and the aftermath left her vulnerable both internally (she had the work through the psychological and emotional aftermath) and externally (she had killed someone in the head vampire's seethe, and Marsilia was not exactly the forgiving type). A number of plot lines: Marsilia aching to avenge the death; Mercy preparing to become the mate of the alpha werewolf Adam, while still suffering from the aftereffects of her assault; the werewolf pack not exactly jumping for joy by the impending union between Adam and Mercy; a strange visit by a college friend that leads her to go to Spokane to escape Marsilia and find the ghost described by her old friend.
When she gets to Spokane, things turn even dicier. To give a bit of background, Spokane has only one vampire because he is so nasty he won't let any others into the city. Through her friend and her trying to help her friend's son, Mercy runs into this nasty creature. She is helped by some strange characters, including the vampire from her home, Stefan. The action in Spokane is pretty riveting. By this time, I had come to understand who was who and what each kind of powers different creatures had and the pages fairly flew by as I could not put the book down.
The ending is satisfying, but it is obvious that Mercy's adventures will continue. Having come to know the characters, I look forward to future novels. If one enjoys paranormal mysteries, this should do the trick. Just be forewarned that if this is your first look at a Mercy Thompson book, it will take a bit to get up to speed. But once that happens, this is quite a book!
