Book Reviews of Bone

Book Review: Bone review
Summary: 2 Stars

as a family after a daughter/sister commits suicide. The family of all together 4 miss her and are struggling from the loss of their beloved family member, poverty, and crushed dreams.

Like said, the book takes place in Chinatown,"Bone" by Myenne NG is a rather touching story/novel about an asian native family that lives in Chinatown, Sanfransico and their struggle together Sanfransisco. The Dulci Fu familylive in a more lower class section the chinese based city, for the family owns and runs a laundry service. Although Leon and their mother are married they do notl live together. Leon lives in an apartment just Souh of where his wife lives. And Nina the youngest daughter lives in New York City. Eventhough the family is rather spread apart they are immensly close because of the death of their loved one Ona.

The two main characters in this book are the narrarator and the main character Leila, and her loving and wise step father Leon. Leon has been in the girls lives for as long as they can remember. He is a smart and wise person that they look up to every bit as much their mother and as if he were their real father. A favorite quote of mine from the book of his is "It's time that makes a family, not just blood. That quote meant alot to me because i come from a family with alot of "steps". And i do beleive that because of Leon's relationship that he has with his step daughters and vise versa, this book is a great one to read for anybody that has step parents, daughters, sisters, etc.

Leila is a wise chinese women. She is the first born out of the three daughters and the most wise and she has the closest relationship with Leon. Even closer than her mother eventhough her mother is his wife. Just goes to show how close they are. She is the one telling the story,or so to say the narrarator. She wants a better life for her and her family more than anything else in the world. This girl has alot of determination.

Ona is the second born daughter. She commited suicide for reasons that i will leave up to you to read and find out. She is very well missed in the Dulcu Fu family.

The theme of this book is that family is everything. You can find money, friends, hobbies, and education anywhere that you go in the world. But a person is born with two things instantly given to them that they cannot get rid of or replace no matter how hard they try, and that is family and herritage. You are obviously born into the family that you have to have for the rest of your living life and this book goes into every detail about it. Leon is very wise like said and he says straight up in the book that family is the best thing that you have in your life time.

In the novel they are going through some hard times and Leila could leave at any given moment with her husband but she takes a leap of faith and decides to take pride in her herritage and the family that she is born into.

My opinion on this book is that it's a good story and has awesome and very dear values. But it was not my type of book. I would reccomend this book to people that can enjoy books with; very low action in them, hardly any romance, has good values on family and very emotional. Those are the traits that totally wrap this book up.

Summary of Bone

"We were a family of three girls. By Chinese standards, that wasn't lucky. In Chinatown, everyone knew our story. Outsiders jerked their chins, looked at us, shook their heads. We heard things."

In this profoundly moving novel, Fae Myenne Ng takes readers into the hidden heart of San Francisco's Chinatown, to the world of one family's honor, their secrets, and the lost bones of a "paper father." Two generations of the Leong family live in an uneasy tension as they try to fathom the source of a brave young girl's sorrow.

Oldest daughter Leila tells the story: of her sister Ona, who has ended her young, conflicted life by jumping from the roof of a Chinatown housing project; of her mother Mah, a seamstress in a garment shop run by a "Chinese Elvis"; of Leon, her father, a merchant seaman who ships out frequently; and the family's youngest, Nina, who has escaped to New York by working as a flight attendant. With Ona and Nina gone, it is up to Leila to lay the bones of the family's collective guilt to rest, and find some way to hope again.

Fae Myenne Ng's luminous debut explores what it means to be a stranger in one's own family, a foreigner in one's own neighborhood--and whether it's possible to love a place that may never feel quite like home.
