Book Reviews of the Bondage of the Mind: How Old Testament Fundamentalism Shackles the Mind and Enslaves the SpiritCustomer Review: A Rant Summary: 2 StarsWhat starts out as an intention to expose the nefarious means employed by "fundamentalists" to entice unsuspecting youth into their fold, quickly unravels to become a full-scale rant against orthodox Judaism in general. Gold chooses three totally arbitrary texts supposedly used by Jewish orthodox proselytizers and uses them as a source of material from which to launch a polemic that is based on the pinpointing of what he considers damning evidence, namely: 1. errors of logic 2. archaeological inconsistencies with the Old Testament 3. intrinsic immorality of (some) orthodox practices 4. invalidity of evidence commonly used to establish the uniqueness of the Jewish people and their traditions. It is in his exposition of the third category that Gold loses the plot entirely and fulminates wildly for 44 pages on the immorality of, variously, orthodox rabbis in general, arbitrary orthodox Jews, members of Israel's religious political parties, the religious laws themselves and the authors of his chosen texts. His conclusion? That Orthodox Judaism is morally bankrupt. As for errors of logic, he typically seizes on two: circular logic (the Torah is true because of evidence contained in the Torah itself) and unfalsifiable propositions (a religious person behaving immorally is not religious after all). In the case of Rabbi Dovid Gottlieb's book (Live Up.. to the Truth), Gold has pitted himself against an accomplished logician, and is found desperately wanting. Whatever Gold's agenda (and it is hard to tell, when you can sense him frothing at the mouth so), a parallel reading of his and Rabbi Gottlieb's texts based on logic alone is likely to sway more people to Orthodoxy than to Gold's strange brand of polemical deconstructionism.
