Book Reviews of Bondage For Sex

Book Review: Bondage beginner
Summary: 4 Stars

As a beginner, I found the pictures very clear and easy to follow, showing the right way to tie up your partner without the worry of hurting them (at least more than they want). The beautiful woman that adorn this book make it more than just an instructional manual but also a piece I would leave out for others to browse. I look forward to exploring more of the book with my partner, and trying many more positions. Thumbs up!

Book Review: Pretty good
Summary: 4 Stars

A good book with some really good tips on directly tying the limbs with rope in a way that doesn't cause the rope to cut into flesh, thereby eliminating the need for cuffs. Also includes some good position suggestions.

Book Review: nice book perfect for amateurs
Summary: 4 Stars

very interesting book very helpgul for amateurs
althought the drawings are not well shown and sometimes you can't figure out the steps for the knots

Book Review: DO NOT buy it ... unless you are already an expert.
Summary: 2 Stars

Do not buy this ... unless you are already a Shibari or knot expert. Or don't care about learning much and just want it for pretty photos. It hurts me to be blunt because I admire Chanta Rose and her wonderfulness comes through in the book. But let's be honest.

The problem is that the book is advertised as usable step-by-step bondage instruction. And it is NOT. Many if not most illustrations and text are not usable ... are too poorly-done to actually be followed by a beginner. The problems include too few photos, photos either duplicated or out-of-sequence, and inadequate or vague text. In addition, many of the knot photos are not thought out, and/or are tied tight and cinched up before the reader has a chance to study the knot and see what has actually been done. Additionally, often the best way to explain knots is to use inked arrows and/or sketches as well as the photos.

There's no secret about illustrating knot-tying adequately. SHIBARI YOU CAN USE by Bridgett Harrington covers much the same ground, and her illustrations and text are well thought-out and USABLE.

Chanta Rose's book also contains some astounding errors! On Pg. 20 Rose shows a "Reef Knot" (aka "Square Knot"). She warns against tying it wrong, making it a "Granny Knot." But her own photos ARE WRONG! They illustrate a Granny, rather than a Square Knot! This is an astonishing error, and makes me wonder if anyone ever carefully read the book and proofed the text and illustrations for usability and correctness! (OTOH, the errors may not matter much, since it's so hard to follow the photos!).

As an interesting sidenote, incorrectly-tied Reef Knots, or misused Reef Knots, have probably accidentally killed more people in the Western world than all other knots combined. They've caused endless slaughter down through the years in the sailing and other fields.

The book title includes the phrase "Vol. I." Let us hope that future volumes show more care, love, proofing, and user-testing.

In fairness to Ms. Rose, although poorly-thought out, most of the photos are sharp and well-exposed; and the models are attractive and some are astonishingly lovely. With more care and professionalism this book coulda' been a home run, and let us hope future volumes will be.

A friend of mine sent detailed letters to both Chanta Rose and her publisher. The publisher responded professionally, no response at all has been received from Rose.

Book Review: Do not buy this book....until its fixed
Summary: 2 Stars

I really wanted this to be a great book. I'm a big fan of Chanta, and a bigger fan of sex and bondage. Unfortunately, this is not a book I could recommend to anyone. The organization is simply horrid. The photos are frequently repeated for no reason. They are out of order or just missing. Worse, many are incorrect. The photographs while sexually interesting, they provide no worthwhile educational function.

Rope work of any kind is confusing for most folks. Luckily methods have been developed to teach rope work. The Navys, Coast Guards, Boy Scouts, rock climbers, firefighters, sailors, window washers, etc. of the world have found great methods of teaching safe rope work. They know that photos alone are confusing. Text descriptions are not helpful to most. You need clean, simple drawings or annotated photographs. If they had been included in this book it would have been a winner.

Because of the inherent danger in this type of play there isn't any room for confusion. Life and limbs are easily damaged. Bondage is inherently risky when done correctly. We know that.

When you add sex with bondage the risks increase. There is more weight and forces on the limbs, tissue, rope and hard points. Sexual activity also distracts your attention and distracts the person in bondage. This increases the risks. Given all of this, its imperative that we get the basics absolutely right. That isn't possible with this book.

Hopefully the author will revise future editions. Certainly if there is a Vol. II, this must be corrected. Midori's book is a great example of a correct way to illustrate rope work. There are other good examples in the textbooks of the professions that use rope.

Until this is corrected I strongly recommend staying away from this book. Please Chanta, fix this and provide a needed text.
