Book Reviews of Blow Fly (Scarpetta)Book Review: Loved it!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Actually, what can you expect (other than a full star rating) for an author who can write like this! Patricia Cornwell is absolutely riveting! I have read a lot of her earlier Scarpetta books and stopped reading after I got pregnant and had babies, maybe sub-consciously not concerned with crime and suspence and more glued to the issue of dirty diapers, playgroups and breastfeeding, of course. So, it's a surprise (even to me) that I even picked this book up from the bookshelves.
I have obviously forgotten about the power of a good book! Let's face it, before this I was reading 'Bridget Jones Diary: The edge of reason" and that book is a mile away (in terms of genre) from Blow Fly.
Like I said, I stopped reading books of this nature some time ago, so, I was a little left out of the loop with Kay Scarpetta and her misfit gang of genuises and beer-drinking pals, queer friends and obnoxious boyfriends. And when I started reading the first few chapters, I was a little.....well, left-out and confused as to who is who.
But her definitive, distinctive, subtle-but-in-your-face writing will bring you back back on track soon enough!
In every single page, there's undeniable susense. You turn the pages against your own will, you can't seem to peel yourself away from the book long enough to take a leak in the bathroom.
And the good thing about Blow Fly is that the omnipotent Kay Scarpetta, award-winning Forensic Scientist (if there's ever such a thing) who is gorgeous beyond belief and is clever in solving mysteries and mind-boggling murders. ...is more human this time round.
Oh well, Scarpetta is more human now, in a sense, because she is going to the dumps now because she thinks her boyfriend died and she lost her job. She's doing small-time consulting and lives with her dog and her former secretary in a small part of Florida. It's a retreat and it's relaxing but not quite what she had in mind. Before this, she was way too successful and a tinge of contempt and disbelief might creep into your heart and thoughts - but now, Kay Scarpetta is more accessible and less successful. But the funny this is that she can still afford all those luxury stuff, even when she is without a job.
There's very much less focus on Dr. Kay Scarpetta here in Blow fly. There's more of Benton Wesley (the supposedly dead boyfriend), her long-time admirer and good friend Pete Marino and some focus on Lucy, Scarpetta's genius niece....but that's a good thing, I suppose. It's not always Scarpetta, Scarpetta, Scarpetta all the time here.
However, the criminal in question here is the man they all call Jean-Baptiste who is a lunatic who is not only inhuman on the inside, he is also apparently inhuman on the outside. He's not a gorgeous hunk of a man who uses his good looks to lure young women into his torture chamber and kill them. He's an ugly being with unsightly baby fine hair all over his body, ugly teeth, almost blind eyes (thanks to Scarpetta in her previous encounter with him) and his almost-deaf hearing (also another notch on Scarpetta's post). Even his death row inmate housemates cannot stand the way he sits on the loo for so long. Oh yeah, he has a malfunctioning malformation of the...erm....privates!
As usual, Patricia Cornwell describes the scenes of inhumanity in such reality that you sometimes wondered how she knew all of this stuff. She spares you nothing! Just don't read the book when you're in the middle of dinner or you'll find yourself running for the loo.
This book, in essence, is about how a mysteriously unsolved murder about a decade ago could help solve the current string of murders in Baton Rouge. How and why a woman enrolled into cop school just so she could spend the rest of her life trying to hunt down the murderer of her own mother. It's all beautifully and faultlessly intertwined together for the reading pleasure of readers like her.
Even if you're not a Kay Scarpetta lover and it doesn't even matter if you like the way Patricia Cornwell or not - the story and the way it winds around your heart will keep you awake (reading) for a couple of sleepless nights!
Summary of Blow Fly (Scarpetta) Readers are in for the shock of Kay Scarpetta's life.
