Book Reviews of Bloodhound (The Legend of Beka Cooper, Book 2)Book Review: Hunting Within Port Caynn Summary: 5 Stars
Bloodhound (2009) is the second fantasy novel in the Beka Cooper series, following Terrier. In the previous volume, Beka went with the Dogs who raided the fire opal workings and freed the miners. Then Beka helped to free Kerun. Later, Beka realized the true identity of the Shadow Snake and singlehandedly hobbled her.
In this novel, Rebekah Cooper is now a full-fledged member of the Provost's Guard. Beka had finished her Puppy training five months ago and is now on her fourth partner. Her first partner died of the red flux, she arrested the second for taking a bribe to ignore murder, and she told the third that she would cut off his hands if he didn't stop pawing her.
Pounce is a constellation -- the Cat -- who is the next best thing to a god. He has been Beka's pet cat for five years. He can mindtalk to Beka or any else he chooses.
Achoo Curlypaws is a scent hound in the Corus Provost's Guard. She is very well trained and exceptionally sharp at following a scent trail. Achoo's name comes from the habit of sneezing upon taking a scent. She has been passed from one handler to another since Phelan quit the Guards.
Clara Goodwin is a corporal in the Corus Provost's Guard. Clary is the partner of Senior Guardsman Matthias Tunstell. They had helped train Cooper and Beka is assigned to them whenever she is between partners.
Nestor Haryse is a sargeant in the Port Caynn Provost's Guard. He is a cousin of Lord Provost Gershom and has known Beka for years.
In this story, Beka is informed by Guardsman Sillsbee -- her current partner -- that he is requesting a new partner. She gives him the fidgets. Beka is rather angry at this announcement and tells him a few of her thoughts on his lack of vigor, vigilance and sense of duty. She also tells him that he eats and drinks too much while on duty.
Beka is embarrassed about the loss of another partner. She dreads facing her friends with the news, but she tells them at breakfast. To her dismay, they all laugh and inform her that most had expected the breakup much sooner.
Tansy comes to breakfast late and upset. She has stopped to get rolls for the meal and the baker found that her coin was false, brass with a thin coating of silver. One of his guards grabbed her, but she kneed him. Then she bribed the baker to not report her for passing coles.
Next shift, Desk Sargeant Ahuda teams Beka with Goodwin and Tunstall and they tease her as expected. Yet they also encourage her to keep trying. If she can't keep a partner, at least she has good friends to tag along with on patrol.
Beka mentions the incident with the baker to Goodwin and Tunstall. Then they find more cases of counterfeit coins. They discover that some are being passed by gamblers from downriver.
They report the situation to Sargeant Ahuda, who passes on the word to other Dogs in the Jane Street Kennel. These guards soon discover many other cases in the Lower City District and even some in the Flash District.
Then Beka has an argument with Guardsman Hempstead about his treatment of Achoo. The animal is covered with sores and welts from his abuse. After Beka's defense of the scent hound, Hempstead gives her the leash and tells her to take on the job. Sargeant Ahuda confirms the transfer of Achoo to Beka and now she has to learn how to handle the creature.
Then Beka is called into a conference at the kennel about the increase in counterfeit coins. The Lord Provost chairs the meeting and presents a report from the Jane Street Dogs. The group decides to send a Dog team to Port Caynn to look for the source of the coles.
Goodwin has served in the port city and has friends there, so she is chosen to go to Port Caynn. Then Beka is selected to go with her. Sargeant Haryse is at the meeting and is designated as their main contact there. The Corus guards are charged with collecting more information in the capitol while Goodwin and Beka are downriver.
This tale takes Beka into a new environment. She is already nervous about the hunt and then she learns that Pounce will not be going with her. She wonders how she will cope, but Pounce tells her that she can deal with the situation.
Port Caynn is much like Corus, but the harbor is different from her usual hunting grounds. Beka soon makes friends in the port city and starts learning the streets and byways. But the Rouge in Part Caynn is very different from the Rat King in Corus; she is street smart, but not very intelligent or wise.
The story goes through many twists and turns. Beka and Achoo make friends and enemies in the port city. Read and enjoy!
Highly recommended for Pierce fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of ancient police methods, simple magic, and a bit of romance.
