I received a copy of Martha Alderson's book from a kind friend, just as I was getting ready to despair over my current manuscript. Wow, what a great guide! It offers specific direction and practical exercises to tie a plot into a cohesive string of scenes. Now I finally understand what I was missing. I'm not much of a plotter...but more of a plodder. I'm prone to just getting all my thoughts down with no clear idea of how these ideas fit into the big picture--or even if they do. But one week, my computer crashed and I couldn't just write stuff. I took out Martha's book and gave it a try. This book breaks down plot -- the problem area for me, and I believe is likely true for most writers as well -- in such a simple, direct method that now I'm off and running again.
