Book Reviews of Black on WhiteBook Review: OK, great as a first book. Summary: 3 Stars
My eight month old got bored with this pretty quickly. It has very few pages, at first he was excited about recognizing the images, but there aren't enough of them to keep him interested for long. It is a good choice for a first book, to get little ones interested.
Book Review: SO SO Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this one with the LOOK, LOOK book and found this one didn't appeal to us as well as the other. We still read/look at this one but love the other much better.
Book Review: I am not impressed. Neither is baby. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this book based on its good reviews. My daughter was 6 weeks old when we received this. I looked through it and immediately cursed the money I wasted on it. The illustrations are not exactly what I thought her first words should be (bib, fork & spoon, butterfly, leaf, elephant, pail...). Nor were they of a uniform quality. Some look computer drawn, with crisp lines, and some look pen drawn, with slightly shaky edges. I couldn't imagine telling a story linking these pictures, or suffering through looking at it for hours -- or even 10 minutes -- while I held it for my daughter. Still, I tried to have an open mind as I introduced her to it, knowing sometimes babies like odd things. Thankfully, our tastes are the same. She has shown no special interest in this book. She looks at our Sandra Boynton board books for longer periods of time, thank goodness, since I actually enjoy those, unlike this book.
I've considered giving this book away, but I did finally find one use for it. We trot it out at get-togethers as a running joke and game among family and friends. (What the heck is that last figure anyway? A clown? A child in a snowsuit?)
Book Review: boring, low quality, board book Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this book and 'White on Black" based on the good reviews. But I was very disappointed when they arrived. First, the images are inconsistently reproduced - a few are nice, detailed line drawings, but the majority are poorly drawn simplistic shapes. For most drawings, the outlines are jagged and pixilated. Second, the choice of items is just odd. (Like a tiny elephant paired with a big bucket?!) Some shapes held my 3-month-old babies interest because they had complex and interesting forms, but most images seemed to just bore him. He was much more interested in more complex black and white shape book "Baby Animals Black and White" by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes. I would NOT recommend this book or any of Tana Hoban's books.
Book Review: don't waste your money Summary: 1 Stars
this book is so simple that my infant has even lost interest in its pictures.
