Book Reviews of Black (Triple Crown Publications Presents)Book Review: What is "Black"?...A Powerful Story Summary: 5 Stars
After reading "Black" by Tracy Brown, my hopes in writing this review are to share my feelings about the book and to encourage others to read it as well. I must say that it is one of the best works of fictional prose I have ever read! This powerful novel invokes a wide range of emotions within the reader like fear and excitement or pleasure and pain. The plot captivates the mind, and can almost stop time because of the author's careful use of suspense. Even the setting is noteworthy because it takes place in one of New York City's most unrecognized boroughs -- Staten Island -- making it all a more enjoyable reading experience. Not only do these ideas make "Black" a powerful story, but there are other reasons which contribute to this factor. Initially, the author introduces the reader to numerous problems within the African-American and Urban communities -- teen pregnancy, single-parent families, family abuse, drug and alcohol use, drug trafficking, street violence, and incarceration and sentencing rates. These ideas are not only introduced into the novel, but they are portrayed so as not to stigmatize or dramatize the events, but to exemplify some positive results which may, ultimately, result from each event. In other words, the author carefully shows that despite the prevalence of teen pregnancy or incarceration of black males within the African-American community, for example, there is always a positive solution for which any "black butterfly" can emerge from its cocoon. Further, "Black" can be enjoyed by a wide range of audiences. The author writes in a language that is easily understood by, as well as emathetic to, its audience. Therefore, this book will prove to be a hit reading time and time again because the story's greatness lies in the fact that it portrays what has existed in the African-American and Urban communities (and seems likely to continue exiting) for far too long! More importantly, it raises questions of policy changes and recommendations, such as pertaining to the Rockefellar Drug Laws. It raises questions of constitutional rights such as on abortion laws. Furthermore, it raises questions on the idea of choice as for morality and legality (as opposed to the opposite of each) when faced with desperation. Because of all of these reasons, "Black" by Tracy Brown should be highly recommended to anyone interested in reading an exciting fictional work.
Summary of Black (Triple Crown Publications Presents)Who said the streets don't love nobody? Black is the novel that shatters the myth. Kaia didn't choose the streets. The streets chose her. Tossed from a broken home, Kaia is forced to learn the hard way just how grimy street life can be. Shedding her innocence overnight it seems, Kaia goes from being an often overlooked, stepped upon and crushed little girl, to a woman. She endures all of the drama that is thrown her way, sometimes catching it and sometimes being knocked flat on her ass. To aid in softening the blow is Aaron. Even street fairy tales have a Prince. Experiencing seclusion and imprisonment while locked down in street dreams and the illusion called love, is Aaron a Savior or Satan? With enemies in disguise, Kaia fights for survival and freedom, but to survive the streets could mean suffocating the freedom of her mind. Like a captured black butterfly, Kaia struggles to emerge and triumph, but victory ain't always sweet. As a matter of fact, sometimes it's bitter to the end.
