Book Reviews of Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation

Book Review: My favorite book
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read a lot of books about pregnancy, birth and parenting and many of them were helpful in different ways. I actually started reading books on these topics years before I was even considering getting pregnant. I have always had a strong interest in child development and pregnancy/birth. I am now a mother of two, so my recommendations come with my actual experience.

I can certainly see how this book may not be for everyone, so this review is written for the people that can benefit from this book, which I will illustrate in my review.

I am a survivor of severe childhood sexual trauma. This is an issue I have been spending my whole life healing from and at each new phase in my life as a woman I have had to encounter these issues from a whole new direction. As much as I was fascinated and hopeful for pregnancy, birth and motherhood...I certainly had a lot of uneasiness when thinking about this in my own life. Interestingly this book never even once mentions sexual abuse and yet it was most helpful to me in this area of my birth preparation. I found this book more helpful than books which were written specifically about survivors giving birth. I didn't relate to those books at all. Maybe because I had been working through my trauma before I became pregnant. Those books seemed to me to stigmatize and hold down pregnant survivors from moving forward into an amazing birth experience.

I am also a dancer (with movement theater experience), and I have always used art as a way of processing just about everything in my life. So, I loved the art, movement, and vocalization aspects of this book. These are all things that come naturally to me, that I have a lot of experience with, and an interest in. I found the chapter on professional birth art the most helpful! But, I feel that even people that aren't into that part of the book would still receive excellent pregnancy/birth info.

This book is fun to read, informative, and stress relieving. Of all the books I read, this one most alleviated my anxieties associated with the unknown experiences ahead of me, as well as prepared me for the actual labor and birth experience. Of all the pain coping techniques I learned about, once I was in labor the ones in this book were the most natural and helpful. Also this book was most helpful in preparing my husband and friend that were with me during my first birth.

This book does not scare pregnant women, but it also does not say that birth is not painful. The book is realistic. Certainly every single bit of the book was not for me, but has anyone ever read a book on such a personal topic and felt that it was written only for them? Doubtful. That's why it is good to be a thinking person and take what you like and not worry about the parts that aren't for you.

I very much enjoy reading about the birth experiences of other women. And I like that she uses this book to walk us through things rather than tossing ourselves into the experience uneducated.

I also like learning about anthropology and history and connecting to other women.

After I gave birth I wanted to read this book again as I processed my experience and preserved my birth memories while it was all so fresh in my mind and body. When I was pregnant again this book was my most treasured literary companion. I processed through my first birth in preparation for my upcoming home birth and felt very much at ease. And I experienced some complications during my second pregnancy, but was able to use this book to work through that before my home birth.

I still like to read this book to reflect on and remember my experiences and can use the art therapy anytime I need to process things along this journey of motherhood.

Two other books I liked were: The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Revised) and The Pregnancy Book: Month-by-Month, Everything You Need to Know From America's Baby Experts. But, I can see there are many other great books on this topic. There were some books I thought I liked until I realized all they did was make me feel like I was prepared for all the horrors that could go wrong. Truth is that doesn't help. Even when something goes wrong it is unexpected and you deal with it along with your trusted midwife and medical helpers (when needed). I wrote a "so you'd like to guide" with more of my recommended books.

This book is useful for births in hospitals, homes, and birth centers.

Summary of Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation

Here is a holistic approach to childbirth that examines this profound rite-of-passage not as a medical event but as an act of self-discovery. Exercises and activities such as journal writing, meditation, and painting will help mothers analyze their thoughts and face their fears during pregnancy. For use during birth, the book offers proven techniques for coping with labor pain without drugs, a discussion of the doctor or midwife?s role, and a look at the father?s responsibilities. Childbirth education should also include what to expect after the baby is born. Here are baby basics, such as how to bathe a newborn, how to get the little one to sleep, and tips for getting nursing off to a good start. Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a process of continuous learning and adjustment; Birthing From Within provides the necessary support and education to make each phase of birthing a rewarding experience.
