Book Review: WHAT A GREAT BASEBALL MIND

BILLY MARTIN FORMER MLB MANAGER DOES A GREAT JOB TELLING US ABOUT HIS CAREER AS A PLAYER AND MANAGER. MOSTLY IT CONCERNS THE MANAGING, WHICH IS THE MOST INTERESTING AND EDUCATIONAL. LIKE BILLY OR NOT, HE GOT RESULTS IN IMPROVING EACH TEAM HE WAS THE SKIPPER. BILLY MADE THE HEADLINES FOR MANY YEARS WHILE MANAGING THE YANKEES AND GOT BOTH GOOD AND BAD FAME. BUT I WOULD SAY MOSTLY BAD, WITH HIS RUN INS WITH REGGIE, GEORGE AND THE MEDIA. THE FANS LOVED HIM FOR HE REPRESENTED THE BLUE COLLAR GUY WHO TOOK NO S__T AND TOLD HIS BOSS WHERE TO GO. BILLY POSSESSED ONE OF THE GREATEST MANAGING AND STRATEGIC MINDS I CAN THINK OF. THE PINE TAR INCIDENT IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES AND HOW HE USED THEM TO HIS ADVANTAGE. BILLY ADAPTED HIS STRATEGIES TO THE STRENGTHS OF HIS TEAM AND FOUND WAYS TO WIN WITH IT. THE DOWN SIDE OF BILLY WAS HIS EXPLOSIVE TEMPER AND HIS ADDICTION TO ALCOHOL. IN THIS BOOK HE DENIES ANY ALCOHOL PROBLEMS AND CONSIDERS HIMSELF A SOCIAL DRINKER. BILLY WAS QUITE A CHARACTER AND WAS QUITE COLORFUL AND CONTROVERSIAL. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND I RECOMMEND IT FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS.
