Book Reviews of Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, Book 1)Book Review: Key word: ROMANCE, as in ROMANCE NOVEL Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely adored this book. It was witty and charming, and the characters were infinitely more HUMAN then most of the characters I've come across in the great sweaty land of hunky man-meat that is Romance Fiction.
I understand why some have chosen to rate this book considerably lower then the 5 stars I've opted to go with; While the main characters, Hawk and Adrienne have looks and intelligence going for them, they also seem to fall rather heavily into some of the more common "Romance" traps and toils.
But then again, what do you EXPECT in a Romance? I suppose it all depends on what you're looking for, since I've usually only sat down with a Romance novel if I just want to have an enjoyable read with little to no real thinking attached.
If that's what you're looking for, then this author definitely has it! Cliche upon delightful cliche, but written with a sensual rawness and wit that you'll ADORE....
Though it's been done over and over again. (There are a LOT of reviews here!) Here's a short summary:
The Hawk is a legendary lover, with an even more legendary beauty. He never lacks for romance or willing women, and he never ONCE anticipates an outright refusal. (If only for his sterling track record)
Adrienne, however, has just found herself falling backwards through time from the twentieth century, and landing rather uncomfortably on top of a very hairy situation...
So is it really any surprise that when Adrienne sees the gorgeous Hawk, not only does she refuse him, but she ALSO does her damndest to avoid him. Hard to do when the legendary Hawk is doing HIS damndest to tame her and claim her with an ardor that more than once gets Adrienne fogged enough to submit to his hungry kisses.
Add in an angry Fae that wants very much to see the mighty Hawk fall, some beautiful settings and fun characters and you have a rip-roaring time-travel romance, with an added edge of Fantasy and Mythology that I, personally, LOVE.
Here are a few things addressed in this book that really impressed me:
1) Adrienne has traveled BACK IN TIME. To SCOTLAND. And she seems to blend in. So she adopts a Burr. (Imagine that! A modern woman in a Romance Novel that actually adopts an accent to blend in rather than announcing to the world (with her "strange" tones) that she is a foreigner! Impressed the heck outta ME!)
2) Hawk's best friend, while gorgeous, had absolutely NO designs upon the leading lady at all. Nor she on him. Nor was Hawk constantly "worrying" about him. (Niiiiice)
3) The love scenes aren't filled to the brim with honeyed words and phrases.
I think that's good for now. Just know that this book is definitely worth your money if you'd like an entertaining read. I can't wait to read more of Ms. Moning's work!
Summary of Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, Book 1)He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . .
An alluring laird...
He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart?until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length?but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.
A prisoner in time...
She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side. . . .
