Book Review: I am NOT "Pavelized"

Like others, I was curious as to the widely varying opinions presented in the reviews for Pavel's books. One thing that came through was that regardless of whether the reviewers thought that the books were overpriced, over-commercialized, or niggardly in the dissemination of info, most seemed to grudgingly admit that there was at least SOME benefit to be had from his material, material that is often not to be found in the teachings of other fitness gurus. Therefore, I ordered this particular title, and my observations follow.

Price - This is a subjective area. Pavel's books do seem a little more than most, but I ordered this particular book used from Amazon marketplace, and I have noticed that the regular price seems to have dropped since then.

Over-commercialized - After reading this book, I feel that this accusation is the result of hyper-sensitivity on the part of some readers. Yes, Pavel clearly embraces capitalism with a high hurrah, and he cheerfully admits it in this book, but it in no way takes up unnecessary space or hinders understanding of the subject matter. Some, however, feel that this is the motivation on Pavel's part for the next charge.

Sparsity of information - Many say that his books could be whittled down to 3 or 4 pages of info, but not this one! If a reader only wants some exercise routines that conform to the principles explained in this book, it could be done, but Pavel clearly wanted the reader to understand exactly the how and why of these principles. The chapters are laid out in a logical progression and each aspect of said principles is explained succinctly, complete with examples. I feel that this is the true value of this book, as a high level of understanding can aid the reader to come up with his own exercise routines that better fit his or her goals (although I also feel it will take more knowledge than what is able to be presented in one volume or a single aspect of exercise physiology to do this effectively). I've actually read reviews where the reviewer was angry that Pavel touched upon another aspect of exercise (say, weight-lifting) without further explanation. Read the title: "Beyond Stretching", it says nothing about muscle-building, ab-conditioning, etc. Then why mention other things? Just to plug his other books? First, one must understand that no aspect of exercise exists compartmentalized. The body benefits from a holistic approach. Although this book is about one subject, it is impossible to explain one thing without touching on others. Second, if he does touch on another subject about which he has written a book, not only do I see nothing wrong with him informing the reader, I feel it is his duty to do so. At any rate, such "plugs" were neither numerous nor distracting.

In sum, I have found that, as in politics, the various fitness gurus, methods, diets, martial art schools, etc. have their various adherents who can get quite fanatical in their attitudes towards each other. Also, readers need to realize that they may have a higher level of knowledge than most about a given subject matter, so that a particular book, while useful to most, may not be of value to them. The knowledge contained in this book I have not encountered in any common exercise regimen, and hardly anyone I know seems to be aware of the principles or physiological aspects, even the fitness fanatics. I found it a fascinating read, and personally most useful. Not all is perfect, though. I agree with some other reviewers that there should have been more cautionary notes about how to pursue such a regimen, and perhaps some more "nuts and bolts" instructions on coming up with routines for the more imaginationally challenged, such as myself. For this reason, I was inclined to give it 4 stars, but I give it 5 just to offset some of the unjustifiably harsh ratings given it by some of the agenda-mongering reviewers here.
