Book Reviews of Betty Crocker's Slow Cooker CookbookBook Review: Every Recipe's a Winner! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this cookbook! Every recipe I've tried so far is winner. There's a short slow-cooking information section at the beginning, and a great variety of recipes from simple and homey, to exotic and special. They all use ingredients on hand or easy to find at the grocery store. Some start from store-bought (cans of soup, salsa, broth), but most use "whole foods." Some of our family's favorites are the Chicken Stroganoff Pot Pie, Chicken Stew with Pepper and Pineapple, Hungarian Goulash, and the unusual Picadillo. The recipes come with substitution suggestions, finishing touches, and success tips. They give great side-dish ideas for a complete meal, such as serving the Thai Chicken with coconut rice and a cucumber vinaigrette. There's a wide variety of soups and stews, meats, poultry, sides, desserts, and also a vegetarian section. Most of the recipes are full page and come with a photo. These are favorites I'll be making again and again. My only complaint is that I wish there was even more!
Book Review: Crockpot Cooking for Gourmets! Summary: 5 Stars
Like another reviewer, I resisted getting a crockpot because I'd like to think of myself as a gourmet cook. I recently had gastric bypass surgery, and my surgeon recommended a crockpot as a way to really make meats tender and easier for me to get (and keep) down.
What a cookbook! It is my first crockpot cookbook, and it was an excellent buy. I liked the "Crockpots for Dummies"-type information in the beginning. Each recipe also has excellent tips - did you know that Basil increases strength with cooking time, but Cilantro mellows? Neither did I, and both are useful tips while cooking! The spiral binding is also wonderful. The pot roasts are delicious, as are the Pork Chops with Mixed Dried Fruit. Tonight I prepared the Beef Brisket with Cranberry Gravy, and felt compelled to write.
I highly recommend this cookbook for crockpot newbies like me. Veterans should find useful and delicious recipes as well.
Book Review: I Feel Like a CHEF Summary: 5 Stars
This book does wonders with the slow cooker. Most people think that all you do with a crockpot is stews and soups but this recipe book allows you to make wonderful meals and desserts. I tell people what I make in my crockpot and they can't believe it. They want the recipes. Put it together the night before and turn it on in the morning. I plan ahead which meals I'm going to make, make the food list for the store and I find I buy less junk. I highly recommend this cookbook. And for the person that asked for shorter cooking times if you don't have the time use a timer. Set up your crockpot recipe the night before and set a timer to turn on the crockpot while you sleep so that the dinner will be ready earlier . (Subtract the hours of cooking from the time you need the dinner to be done and set the timer accordingly). The whole idea of crockpot cooking is SLOW. If you need something quick use a microwave.
Book Review: Great basic slow cooker cookbook Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using this cookbook for over 7 years and it is a great cookbook. It isn't a super fancy one but it teaches you the basics and has a wide variey of dishes. It includes everything from appetizers to desserts to sides and a wide variety of main dishes. Tonight I was able to make "Beef and Potatoes with Rosemary" for the meal and "Hot Fudge Sundae Cake" for dessert in my smaller crockpot. It made for super easy entertaining, just adding a salad and bread and dinner was done.
The intro. gives good must-know tips for slow cooking. A unique, useful feature is it also gives great recipes for those leftovers you often have with large crockpot cooking. I have liked EVERY recipe I've cooked with this and have compliments from others EVERY time I serve from this book. I would recommend this to anyone unless they like super fancy, elaborate cooking.
Book Review: WONDERFUL Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my most used slow cooker cookbooks. I like everything about it. It is great that it is spiral bound. I have used many of the recipes and every one of them has turned out delicious. The cooking times listed are just about right. Some of the recipes may have too much salt, so I use my judgment and just decrease it a bit. After all, it is easy to add salt at the table if necessary. However, sometimes the recipe will say to use either wine OR beef broth or something similar. That, of course, changes the amount of salt necessary, so I need to adjust accordingly. I love how the proper size of each slow cooker is mentioned for each recipe. So many cookbooks don't mention that, and you just have to figure it out based on the number of servings.
I love this cookbook and I think it is one of the best slow cooker cookbooks available.
