Jim Silke, an artist who has created many ravishing portraits of Bettie, in this book reflects on and tries perhaps to explain or at least describe some of the magic of this lady who was more than just another pin-up, more even than the queen of the pin-ups.
There is a lot of nudity in this book. There are photos and illustrations. There are images that are not of Bettie. It's not a bio of Ms Page; it's not a history of Silke's work; it's not a tale of how American culture became more appreciative of the pulp side of creativity -- it's all of that, and more.
I think that anyone who is a fan of Silke may like this book. Certainly anyone with an interest in the rise of the pulps will probably enjoy it. It covers a lot of cover art that hasn't really been taken seriously anywhere else. For myself, I was really looking for something that was more a portfolio of Silke's work, so I will keep looking.
