Book Reviews of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert BookBook Review: What a treasure trove from the masters of American ice cream! Summary: 5 Stars
I received a Cuisinart ICE-21TQ Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker, Turquoise recently and immediately ordered myself a copy of this book so that I could take full advantage of the opportunity to make my own ice cream. Ben & Jerry provide a candid history of the birth of their frozen empire and generously disclose a bunch of their very best recipes. Of these, the basic sweet milk recipes are priceless as they form the base for the majority of the recipes. The Cherry Garcia delivers an authentic experience (my favorite) and the mocha recipes are a huge hit with my 17 year old. Pair this book up with an ice cream machine and you have a wedding or graduation gift that will bring you to mind for years to come - in the best possible way!
Book Review: Must have book for anyone with an ice cream maker! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently got an ice cream maker and had to get a good book with easy recipes. This book is it! Simple and very few ingredients with easy instructions make this book a keeper. My first ice cream (Jerry's Chocolate) was just amazing. Smooth, creamy and the taste was out of this world. I was so impressed that the very next morning I made a batch of Butter Pecan to have after dinner tonight.
I know many people have issues with raw eggs though they do have alternative methods in this book. Another option I suppose would be egg beaters. I personally use raw eggs since I have no issue with them. I have eaten hundreds of raw eggs and have never gotten ill but do get food poisoning at least once a year from chain restaurants- go figure since we hardly ever eat out!
Book Review: Entertaining and Delicious! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fun recipe book, which will give you all kinds of confidence to make "designer" ice creams, with your home made ice cream maker. The story of Ben and Jerry is funny and endearing. They explain that it's almost impossible to make a truly "bad" batch of home made ice cream, and that has been my experience, too. The recipes are simple and include many of the Ben and Jerry's all time favorites. (Cherry Garcia, Dastardly Mash, Heath Bar Crunch, etc.) There is also a good explanation of the properties of ice cream - butterfat content, air introduction, sweeteners, etc. From this one ice cream recipe book, you'll be on your way to making the best ice cream you've ever tasted, and dreaming up flavors you *wish* you could get at an ice cream shop.
Book Review: Cherry Garcia is what they serve in heaven ... Summary: 5 Stars
Having spent some time in Vermont I have a special place in my heart for Ben & Jerry. This is a nicely written, often humorous book that includes not only some great recipes but solid information related to ice cream making in general. Experimentation is strongly encouraged and it is fun to read about what inspired some of the great flavors that make Ben & Jerry's what it is. I would have bought this book for the Cherry Garcia recipe alone!
Several comments have been made regarding raw eggs and I appreciate those concerns. The book does provide three base recipes that you can build on, only one of which uses eggs. You can also cook the eggs creating a custard base for the ice cream.
A nice addition to your ice cream recipe collection.
Book Review: Good ice cream recipies Summary: 5 Stars
I received this book with the replacement bowl for my Cuisinart ice cream maker and it came in a big box where it got a little crumbled - because its a soft cover. That was kind of dissapointing for a new book.
Nevertheless - the recipies are good and it is entertaining. But a little too much drawings and designs for my personal taste. (I like pictures)
When you red this book you certainly can use it for any other ice cream flavor you might want to try out.
I made some really tasty ice creams - raspberry being my favorite - but I also made banana, chocolate, mango, pineapple and peach ice cream - all very good.I love them when they are not all the way frozen. This book has just one down side; it is very dangerous for your waste line!
