Book Reviews of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book

Book Review: The only ice cream recipe book you need!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the most adorable little cookbooks I have ever seen. It has the cutest artwork, in keeping with most of the Ben and Jerry's ice cream designs on their cartons. It has a cute story in the beginning which explains how they started in the business and became successful. It's a cool story. In the beginning of the book they explain different techniques. For example, if you are using fruit they tell you which fruit to add sugar to and which ones not to. There is a section for their Top ten flavors, then some fruit recipes, chocolate, of course, and frozen yogurt and other treats like cakes and cookies. They have three cream base recipes and number one is their most popular and that's the one I have been using with a lot of success. I made the chocolate chip cookie dough recipe and I thought it tasted almost 100% like the real thing. Maybe even better because it was so fresh. (For reference I use the Cuisinart IC-30 stainless steel 2 quart ice cream maker)For $10 this is a must-have for anyone that owns an ice cream maker. The recipes are simple and yield great, tasty ice cream.

Book Review: Yay for ice cream!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a Cuisanart ice cream maker and immediately bought this book to go with it, since I absolutely love Ben and Jerry's ice cream. I decided to make a version of cookies 'n' cream with Mint Oreos (it was all I had). I followed the recipe for the base and the cookie chopping and set it all up and waited. After it's done, the ice cream is a little soft (due to the machine, not the recipe) but after sitting in the freezer it become hard, but not too hard to scoop. I've had people amazed when I tell them I made the ice cream instead of buying it. I do credit B&J for the recipes... but homemade ice cream tastes just as great! The only complaint my mom had was that it wasn't sweet enough for her (easily fixed by adding more sugar next time). If you love their ice cream, you have to have this book. This way, you can make your favorite flavors just the way you like them! Like, I love Chunky Monkey, but I don't like the nuts in it so now I can make it without nuts! Woohoo!

Book Review: Taste like the Real Product but You Make it at Home

I purchased this title along with the Kitchen Aid Ice Cream Bowl
attachement for my Kitchen Aid Mixer, hoping to get more use out of the mixer. I read all the concerns about the raw eggs that Ben & Jerry's book recommands, and took to heart that other online reviews suggested to use Egg Beaters instead. Because my husband has just recently (since I've receivced the ice cream maker this very summer) been diagnonised as a diabetic, I have also used Splenda instead of sugar. No difference. And where Ben & Jerry suggest "shaving" chocalate, I found I get more out of the bar, if I chop it.
Also the biggest thing is....The longer the cream base is refridgated, the easier it sets in the ice cream maker! And for the cookie dough ice cream, you can use 10 to 12 oz of pre-made dough from a tub (or roll). I used a melon scooper (small end) to form the balls of dough, and then also added a small bag of semi sweet chocolate bits for added taste. Enjoy!

Book Review: WOWEEEEEEE!

I got a Cusinart Ice Cream Maker for Valentines day. I immediately went out and got this book. It is awesome. I made a batch right away. I made the Mint Oreo and threw in some chopped up peppermint patties for good measure. It was so good. It's still hardening as I type, but the taste and texture of the ice cream in the soft serve version was awesome.

This book is a great. The basic recipes are a great starting point. Also, once you get a sense of how to add the ingredients, the possibilities are endless.

I'm making a list of what flavors I'm gonna make next!

Enjoy!

Oh, I used egg beaters instead of eggs......I have a two year old so I didn't want to use raw eggs. Granted, I never made it with real eggs to compare the end product, but I'm so satifisied with how it came out with egg beaters, there's no need (in my mind) to even try it with whole eggs.

Book Review: Entertainly and Educational
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased this book at the same time as we invested in Cuisinart's Indulgence Ice Cream Maker. Both were excellent purchases and make a great team.

Please read the introductory pages and sidebars in this book. Not only a fun read but also enlightening and encouraging for small business dreamers and ice cream makers.

All of the recipes I have tried say they make a quart. This is a generous (of course) quart because generous is part of Ben and Jerry's philosophy.

We like a little sweeter chocolate so I substitute semi or milk chocolate for their unsweetened chocolate squares. I also use a microwave to melt the chocolate rather than double boiler. Just my preference.

We started reading some of the book aloud to our teen kids and they asked for more! Along with their ice cream, of course.
