Book Reviews of Beloved (Plume Contemporary Fiction)Book Review: An educated opinion Summary: 5 Stars
With a BA and an MA in English, I have read a few books in my time. Beloved is among the most haunting and substantive novels I have ever studied. I was lucky enough to read it in a graduate seminar, and it has remained in my consciousness ever since. It is a beautiful, devastatingly haunting story. Morrison once said, "People tell me, 'Your novel is on my bed stand.' I don't want books to be what people dip into before they go to sleep." Beloved is disquieting and that quality is its great strength. If you want light entertainment, read John Grisham.
Book Review: Pure Genius Summary: 5 Stars
The writing in Beloved is nothing less than genius. Toni Morrison is at her absolute peak in this novel. I've read this book several times and each time I discover something new and amazing. Morrison masterfully weaves the construct of time into themes of this work. There are so many poetic, philosophical and spiritual nuances to this piece that I would do this novel no justice by trying to explain them or list them. Of the hundreds of books I've read in my life, Beloved is my favorite and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys reading....it is a treasure.
Book Review: Beloved: a work of a true genius. Summary: 5 Stars
Toni Morrison is a genius. Perhaps, those who have written bad reviews of this book are not in touch with the style of writing that Morrison uses in her literature. You don't just 'read' Toni Morrison. The words become a part of you. Her characters get under your skin. Her storylines, while to some may be far fetched, provoke your mind and imagination. I would, however, not recommend this to be the first Toni Morrison book for someone to read. You must first read Song of Solomon, that book changed my life.
Book Review: A visceral book, gets under your skin (no matter what color) Summary: 5 Stars
BELOVED is a riveting, powerful account of slavery that put me as a reader in the place of a newly freed slave... Though I am a young, middle class, Caucasian girl, I felt what Sethe, Denver, Baby Suggs, and even Beloved felt... I understood their actions and the emotions that motivated them. I believe this effect to be a great victory for an author, for people fear what they do not understand... If an author can bring understanding to his or her readers, then they truly have - and give - a great gift.
Book Review: a book you will never forget Summary: 5 Stars
Why I read this book, I am not sure. It took a great sense of wonder to read and finish to the end. To wonder about the person who could endure writing such a book increased its enormous value,You knew she told a terrible truth.
Maybe the most important book ever writen about how life was for blacks in america. It fuels the desire to never forget BELOVED and to do what you can to reduce or irradicate abuse of any kind to other human beings.
