Book Reviews of Beloved (Plume Contemporary Fiction)

Book Review: Morrison's work leaves me speechless.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll never forget the first book I read by Toni Morrison: Song of Soloman. It was my first year in college, American Literature, and her work still amazes me for its beauty almost ten years later. I cherish her work, especially Beloved, because it tears me apart, makes me breathe, laugh, and cry and choke on the bittersweetness of life.Morrison's work frightens me, enlightens me and will mark my life forever. We are so privileged to have such an amazing and gifted writer sharing her ideas, her images of time and the love and work and pain of life as seen in the particular and the eternal. Thank you Toni Morrison!

Book Review: This book is haunting!
Summary: 5 Stars

Toni Morrison is amazing. I have read several of her books, Beloved is by far the best. Not to say that the others weren't exceptional. Morrison is so amazing, the detail with which she describes aspects of slavery and of Sethe's life, astound me. You definately have to be patient and read this book carefully--maybe twice. I am looking forward to seeing the movie, though the actors chosen to play the characters in the book confused me a little. I think Oprah and Danny Glover are amazing, but I did not see them in these roles. Morrison is an amazing writer and I look forward to reading all of her books.

Book Review: T. M. writes w/ confidence, insight, and a gift for language
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm looking forward to reading more from Toni Morrison. Beloved boldly addresses issues that we modern Americans easily toss to the bottom of our internal skeleton closet after the high school history unit on "Reconstruction". And WITH the importance of the questions posed in the novel, Morrison has given us a generous helping of poetry. This book sings. Read and re-read the paragraph about the corn-silk. the story line may be hard to follow if you dislike the stream of consciousness clip that the book takes. Think "To the Lighthouse" but with a much more enthralling plot.

Book Review: hauntingly, achingly beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

I do not believe that I have ever been as moved by a piece of writing as Beloved and as a English Literature student that is no mean feat. Those, and as I see there are a few of you, who believe that the horrors which African-American slaves were subjected to are 'insignificant' should firstly be ashamed by their ignorance and secondly stick to reading the second class 'literature' that they are so obvoiusly used to. Beloved touched my soul and its words, I believe will haunt me always. This is the first of Morrison's works that I have read but it will certainly not be the last.

Book Review: Without a doubt the BEST book I have ever read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book so much I recommended it to my sister, who prefers to read medical thrillers. Everyone should read this book and wrestle with what it means to hold your child's life in your hands. Reminded me of "Sophie's Choice" in that aspect. What terrible agony and depth of emotion and Morrison brings it all to light, slowly and painfully in a stream of consciousness manner. I admit this style drove me nuts at times, but how else to tell such a story than through the mind's eye of the mother, Seth. Read it slowly, savor it, and you WILL be rewarded.
