Book Reviews of Beloved (Plume Contemporary Fiction)

Book Review: A response to the Princeton, New Jersey review
Summary: 5 Stars

I might get in trouble responding to this review, but... I have a problem when someone goes on and on bashing a masterpiece such as Beloved. Yes, the characters might show ignorace. But when you are a slave, of course you would be ignorant! You never went to school! Now look, people have a right to their opinion, but when they suggest that Toni Morrison should be taken away her Nobel prize just because one reader didn't like it, I have to say something. As for the book... the lines that haunt me are: Beloved, you are my sister, you are my daughter haunt me. For those lines, Ms. Morrison deserved all the prizes she got for the book. And if you don't agree with me, write your own book and see how easy it is.

Book Review: Spiritually chilling!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have not checked out the movie, GO! This book was exciting to me to see a nice combination of history and supernatural. I was stunned and informed all at the same time. Toni Morrison is in the ranks of Ntozake Shange. I have not read any other author, who has kept my attention as well as amaze me with some good ol' truth. I think for too long writer's have focused on a conventional tales that are beginning to bore. Morrison is definately not boring in any area. If this is your first time reading Morrison get ready to be glued to the book and take time to read more of her books. This book will definitely be etched in your brain when you finish. It will also put your brain into motion.

Book Review: Can you believe I once threw this book across my bedroom?
Summary: 5 Stars

That is how my first encounter with Toni Morrison unfolded. I was so confused and angry I threw it across my bedroom screaming at the top of my lungs. Many years later, and after reading "The Bluest Eye", "Sula", "Jazz" and my favorite, "The Song Of Solomon", I picked the dreaded "Beloved" from the shelf and decided to try it again. And am I glad that I did! It is her best work. The characters are three dimensional and wholly human. It is the story of Sethe, a former slave, who is haunted by the past, and the ghost of her daughter, Beloved. A certified classic. It makes you want to thump Faulkner and Hemingway across the head with it.

Book Review: Beloved will open your eyes to the life of freed slaves.
Summary: 5 Stars

Beloved by Toni Morrison gave me a new view on the life of freed slaves. While reading the book I really felt the pain of the main charector, Sethe. Sethe was a slave who had run from her master when she was very young and with child. It seemed she had escaped with no problem but something very strange happened when she reached her destination. She killed her baby.[No, not the one she was just pregnant with, another] Well, this child comes back to life and tries to kill Sethe. At first I found the book very confusing but after a while I couldn't put it down. In some ways its like a mystery because you don't know what will happen next!

Book Review: A rewarding effort!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book the third time throughout four years and the more I read the more I like it. Because of the continuous moving back and forward with the time and because of the supernatural happenings,it is not an "easy book". But its remarkable characters:Sethe,Beloved,Paul D Baby Suggs,Stamp Paid and Mister (a cock!),they all are unforgettable. Taking full advantage from Morrison's superb baton, the book perfectly joins historical events with imagination, hate with love, courage with passion, crude realism with lyrism. Stylish and ever-appealing this book will be a very treasured possession in your collection.
