Book Reviews of Beloved (Plume Contemporary Fiction)

Book Review: Mysterious, compelling, and savagely beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

I first came to Morrison's work in graduate school when I was forced to read "Sula." It was yet another occasion when I learned why the teachers were the teachers and the students were the students.

Morrison's insightful and sometimes frightening representations of the emotions that accompany intense passions--hatred, love, fear, joy--blend seamlessly into her detailed and realistic accounts of lives that she seems to have lived herself. She never sinks to judging her characters for her readers. Instead, she gives living color to these pitiable yet proud, misguided yet messianic lives. And each life she shows us has at least one facet that rings true to our own lives.

Buy it or borrow it. Or borrow it and then buy it. After you read it, you'll want it on your shelves.

Book Review: Powerful look at mother-daughter relationships.
Summary: 5 Stars

In Beloved, Toni Morrison gives us a glimpse into the world of a mother pushed to the ultimate limit. The reader is given an inside seat in this fascinating drama that was based on historical events. Morrison has given us a text that will challenge you all the way. After reading this book, you feel as if you were part of the story; one that should not be forgotten. This book is a "must read" for anyone. The painful rememories of Sethe will make you want to reach out and touch her. Paul D will bring tears to your eyes. Denver is the true heroine whose innocence will steal your heart away. This book engages you from the start. You cannot help but be swept up into the turmoil and pain of the characters. One of the best books I have read!

Book Review: One of the great books of this century!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read Beloved twice and I feel it's one of the greatest books ever written. Beloved is not an easy read, but it's an amazing book. Toni Morrison tells the story of Sethe, an ex-slave that killed her child, so the child won't have to be a slave. After a mysterious stranger comes that will force Sethe and those around her to discover the secrets that lie within them and face the past. Beloved is the tpe of read that involves the reader with the character and story. Toni Morrison shows the reader why slavery was such a disgrace and what it did to African-Americans that had to suffer. It's power will move you, It's brutality will shock, and the expierence of reading it will haunt you forever. I love this book and I will reread again along with future generations.

Book Review: Thought Provoking, Historically sound
Summary: 5 Stars

Beloved is a challenging work of literature. I have read two other novels by Toni Morrison and Beloved by far is the "easier read". Upon completion of Beloved I happened to be vewing a PBS special "Africans in America", this historical documentation so paralled Beloved from an historical perspective it helped me to visualize the taste of iron that Paul D referred to. Ms Morrison uses a lot of symbolism in her writings, however I appreciate the level of intellect that is required to bring her readers to a higher level of awareness. I have just returned home from seeing the movie and it was a pleasure to see how close the movie paralleled the book. This is one book that I wish I had purchased in hard cover.

Book Review: Controversy, Beauty, and Sadness...
Summary: 5 Stars

_Beloved_, like many of Ms. Morrison's books, seems to draw either magnanimous praise or slashing criticizm. Rarely, does it seem, has an author been so loved, or hated, by anybody. But if you love Toni Morrison, you probably love her for books like this, which sweep over you like a humid, summer breeze in the south. If you find the plot debatable, or think Faulkner is overrated, don't bother with this, or any of her books. They're not for you. Personally, I think this stands behind only _Song of Solomon_ as her finest hour. The characters get to you right from the start, and the suspense builds throughout. Call her overhyped, call her underpraised, but Toni Morrison is a damn good writer, and this is one of her best.
